Should I request a roommate?

For those of you who currently attend USC - did you request a roommate and get to know them via Facebook and/or email first? Or did USC pair you randomly with someone? I've been searching some threads that have been going around regarding roommate searching but I don't see anyone I would be THAT compatible with - plus, of course, not EVERYONE posts on these threads or on the housing registration website.

I was just wondering if USC did a good job of pairing you with someone compatible if you did not request a roommate on your own.

I did not request a roommate - (wanted it to be random, meet someone completely new, and didn’t want to feel bad if things didn’t work out well) - and we’re best friends. That said, our interests did not match up at all (or the small selection of interests that USC makes you fill out), but it just worked for us. I know lots of people who did random selection and HATE their roommates because USC just doesn’t seem to use the answers at all to match up people. It’s pretty much as random as it gets.

Then again, I also know people who requested roommates but they ended up not liking each other. In the end, you never know what’s going to happen. To be on the safer side, I’d recommend finding people on facebook (there’s probably a thread going for it) and scouting out potential roommates. Talk to a few people, see if interests align and go from there! If things don’t work out, you can always switch roommates next semester. You only really need to be in your room whenever you go to sleep, after all. :)
