So how do roommates work at UNC? I know there's a facebook
group but are there other methods of finding a roommate?

Also, do freshman in dorms get close (friendship wise)? I'm asking because it seems
as if most freshman get placed in suites which seems worse than a hall based dorm.

If one gets put on south campus, how does the bus system work?

Thanks in advance!

You can use “roommate finder” at [UNC Housing Roommate Finder - Roommate Home](http://housing.unc.edu/roommates/). D started with this but then decided to go random roommate.

I used the roommate finder when I was a freshman (I’m now a senior) and I have lived with my roommate all 4 years. It is a great and under used resource.

I also found my roommate on the roommate finder and we have grown to be like sisters. We are moving into an apartment next year!
All my friends who had random ended up with horror stories by Christmas. All 3 of them had to move rooms b/c it was that bad.
A good/bad roommate can support you or make your life hell.

^ Agree.

I’d say avoid focusing on irrelevant details when looking for a roommate. You taste in music/tv/whatever doesn’t matter. What does matter is your sleep schedule, alcohol/drug use (or lackthereof), feelings about guests in the room, feelings about sharing things, etc. etc. I’d also try to meet in person before you take the plunge because people’s online personalities can be very different from their real life personalities. (Meet in a public place, with your parents’ knowledge and blessing, etc. etc.)

I met my roommate online and we’ve had a great year! We’re rooming together next year and I honestly don’t think I could’ve picked anyone better. Internet FTW!

Well my sister did random roommate, and she loved her roommate. I guess it is more risky to do it that way, but honestly, you could end up with a really good or a really bad roommate either way.

If I request an Honors roommate do I still have to fill out a housing application (with Cobb as #1)?

Ah, see I used Facebook/Roommate-finder to find my freshman roommate and we definitely did not become BFFs. I roomed with a casual friend my second year and we got along awesome. During a summer session, I roomed with a random roommate, and that was a nightmare. I roomed with two close friend this year, and that worked out really well.

It’s kind of luck of the draw no matter what way you go for your first year, but rest assured that your freshman roommate will not define your Carolina experience. I met all of my friends through a classmate, not in my dorm. For others, they find their closest friends in thier suite or floor. It’ll work out, don’t worry!

Even honors roommates don’t always work out. Being smart on paper might mean that they lock themselves in a room and study quietly all the time; it might mean that they party hardy 5 nights a week and just happen to be genius; it might mean that they disappear for days at a time and hardly ever stay in the room; or it might mean that they are your room-soul mate. I’ve seen all of these types of people end up as my friends’ honors roommates.

As for the buses on South Campus, they run roughly every ten minutes or so. Completely free, and 80% of them will take you right up to the center of campus in ten or so minutes. They only time you might have troubling catching a bus you need is if it’s raining. The U and the RU will be your best friends if you live on South campus.
