How does binghamton do roommates? Do they send out a housing survey or just place you with whoever?

Residential Life has a housing survey that asks general roommate questions, such as if you smoke or if you’re a morning person. This enables them to (hopefully) room you with someone similar. You also rank the different communities as well as sign up for any different living styles (i.e., Learning Communities or Chemical Free housing).

Last year, the housing process began on April 20. You are eligible to begin the process if you’ve paid your housing deposit.

Can you explain more about the Learning Communities? I was a bit confused by what the website said about them…

How do you pay your housing deposit? I cannot find it anywhere on the website. Is housing first come first serve?

rassydassy: Learning Communities are basically areas within a community in which everyone has some sort of common class (for example, there’s a learning community for engineers). You can read about it here:

JFR0101: You should be able to pay your housing deposit online via QuikPay. You can read about the process from LAST YEAR at this page:

Housing is first-come, first-served for housing priority (i.e., If you want a specific community, it’s in your best interest to register earlier). However, all freshmen who pay their deposit are guaranteed a place to live.

so its on a first come first served basis?
is there any way to guarantee a specific community?

pinky7129: The only students (to my knowledge) that are guaranteed their first choice housing preference are those in the [University Scholars Program](<a href=“Scholars | Scholars Program | Binghamton University”>Scholars | Scholars Program | Binghamton University).

Residential Life uses the time you submitted your housing preferences as one of the variables in where you’re placed. Other things include the other things you submit in your questionnaire, such as preferences for Chemical Free housing or a mutually-selected roommate.

When will i be able to leave my deposit and pick my housing? I really want to live in CIW!!

also, if i want to request a roommate, do i need to do that when I complete my housing?

Would you recommend trying to find a roommate beforehand (Uroomsurf or Facebook) or trusting ResLife with it?

so its a first come first serve, the earlier you submit, the better chance

I was just checking out the official binghamton univeristy class of 2014 facebook page and it seems like everyone is try to find roommates. They are posting surveys and everyone is going on uroomsurf.com… is this the way to go?
