I was researching the business school at Michigan and found that they do not have opportunities to study abroad for a semester. The only opportunity to study abroad would be during the summer for a 3 week session. I was disappointed to read that since I was looking forward to a semester abroad but the Ross school of business does not allow that.

^^exactly…my D has multiple friends there who were surprised to find this out AFTER they were there…

good catch…

I know Ross is an excellent program but not having the opportunity to study abroad is a bummer. The program is very stringent!

I wonder what would happen if you just did it and came back. What would they do? I imagine they’d let you make up the classes you missed off-schedule. If they didn’t, the only alternative would be to kick you out. Though before the fact I bet they’d threaten something like that.

Here’s the upside–my D’s friends who were in Ross (and several who went to Wharton) took their generous signing bonuses and traveled to Thailand and China after graduation for 3 weeks.

I believe if you miss a semester of Ross, unless for “extenuating circumstances,” you have to re-apply in order to finish the program. Don’t hold me to that, but I’m pretty sure I read it somewhere when looking through BBA scheduling info.

That is my point.Granted it is an awesome program, it is limiting due to its structure. So if you had high hope of studying abroad for a semester…Ross is not a program for you.

I don’t get it. If you come in with enough AP credits, why can’t you study abroad during one of the semesters in your 2nd year. For example, you can take the Winter term off for study abroad. All you have to do is:

take Financial Accounting 271 and Macroecon 102 in your freshman year

take the exam to waive Bus Stats 301

move Bus Com 250 to the Fall term

Did I miss something?

Does not look like they promote such moving around Go Blue

Q: Could I study abroad while in the program?

Yes. The Ross School offers several international BBA summer programs. Also, you may participate in summer programs offered by the U-M Office of International Programs or other colleges and universities. Finally, leaves of absence during the regular academic year may be approved for truly unique educational opportunities; students are usually required to have at least a 3.0 GPA and to step out of the BBA Program for an entire year. Leaves of absence are not permitted for general, one-term study-abroad programs.

from the FAQ section in BBA Ross

You can’t do a semester abroad during the academic school year, but you can definitely do it during the summer. I know tons of students in Ross who do their own independent study abroad trips during the summer and visit countries for 3 or so months. The reason they try to limit you from doing study-abroad, from what I’ve heard, is because they’d rather you seek out employment/internship opportunities, which in turn makes Ross looks better (which ultimately would be better for you, imo).

Ross is also non-accelerated, so it doesn’t matter how many AP credits you have anyway. They cap your credits coming into the program at 45, so regardless of how many credits you have, only 45 count towards your Ross degree, even if you had 70 or whatever. However, the credits are not lost should you decide to pursue a dual degree.

They are super strict about graduating early/late, so even though from a logic standpoint it seems you’d be able to take a semester off if you took the necessary pre-reqs, it won’t happen. Sucks, but just travel during the summer.

Is it officially forbidden/discouraged by the Ross School of Business? I described in post #8 how you might take 2nd year Winter off for study abroad. If you come in with AP credits for Calc and Microecon, you can easily shuffle around the business required courses without missing a beat.

Go blue -pleae read post #9 that reads that you cannot take a leave of absecse during the program. Don’t think your plan will work! See my link

is it possible to graduate 1 semester early with the BBA program though?

^Yes I know people who have graduated 1 semester early.
