Ross School of Business, I'm confused

Ok, so i want to get a degree in accounting at Umich. I do not want to take the masters of accounting or whatever

So when i apply for Umich, do i have to do the preferred admit to Ross if i want to study accounting? Why does it ask me to write an essay about some BBA degree?

If i want to get a degree in accounting, do i have to apply to Ross after freshmen year?

I don't understand how this all works, do i even have to write the preferred admi t essay? Is an accounting degree called BBA?

You cannot major in accounting at the U of M, meaning you will not get a degree in it. The degree will be a general BBA, which stands for Bachelor of Business Administration. We don't have traditional majors in any department. You can "emphasize" in accounting, however, by taking many accounting electives. So everyone gets a BBA, but they'll have different electives in their coursework. There is no BS in Accounting/Finance/Marketing/you name it like they do in other schools.

If you want to get into Ross directly from HS, you must apply as a pre-admit, which means you will write an extra pre-admit essay. If you fail to make it into Ross as a pre-admit but DO get accepted into the LSA, you can study at the LSA for one year, take the pre-requisites (ECON 101, English 125/GTBOOKS 191/CLCIV 101, and MATH 115 or equivalent), and apply during the second half of your freshman year.

If you want to become a CPA, you will need 150 credits to take the CPA exam, which means you can do it all as an undergrad or do a standard undergrad program (120 credits) and get your extra 30 credits with your masters in accounting. Most BBAs that want to enter public accounting go directly from the BBA to the MAcc. The BBA program alone (without the MAcc) will generally not prepare you enough compared to accounting majors from places like UIUC or UT-Austin. If you're set on going into public accounting without getting the MAcc right away, I suggest looking at other schools where you can take MAcc level courses as an undergrad.

By the way, you don't need to be in Ross to get into the MAcc. All you need, regardless of your school affiliation, is ACC 271, 272, 312, 315.

Hope this helps. Sorry if that sounds like too much info. If you have specific questions, I'll try to help you out.
