ROTC and Medical School

So the only way I can afford my dream school is if I receive a ROTC scholarship. This requires 4-5 years of service after my undergraduate education. I also really want to attend medical school and I was curious to see if I could attend Med school (Or at least take some classes) while I was serving in the military. Anybody know if that is possible?

Yes you can but the selection process is very rigorous.

What branch? My experience is that students who join ROTC to finance their education drop the program 99% of the time. The ones that make it and commission want to be an officer above all else.

This has become one of the more difficult scholarships to get now. If you are fortunate enough to get one ther eis NO guarantee you will get to go to med school. In the Navy your service assignment is determined by the Navy. Only a very small handful (<10) Midshipmen get the opportunity for med school. ROTC’s mission is to turn out officers not doctors.

Out of 24 Midshipmen at my DS’s unit Freshman year only 4 will graduate and commission. It was obvious on day 1 which ones would survive. The ones that wanted to serve as an officer. The ones that wanted money quickly left.

Find another way. There is no such thing as a “dream” school.

BTW, minimum commitment in the NAVY for ROTC is 8 years (5 active duty, 3 reserves).
