I am a graduating senior for this year and I'm interested in trying to obtain an Army ROTC scholarship. I have been unable to find information on what to do as I'm in between my actual first year of college and the end of my high school year. Also my parents are offwrin me no assistance in paying for college. I graduated with a 3.7, 49th in my class, and many other academic achievements. I have already contacted the AROTC guy at the school and I have an appointment with him during my summer welcome. I was just wondering if anyone had some tips for my current situation. Thanks in advance!
By the way I'm going to Mizzou

It is too late to obtain a AROTC scholarship for fall 2011. It’s possible that the Officer you meet with will allow you to join for Fall sem. without a scholarship and if you do well, apply for a scholarship. Did you apply for Financial Aid to pay for your first year?

You did the important thing in making that appointment. Under the normal process, rising seniors are starting to apply for 2012-2013 scholarships and there is nothing you can do about that now. There are possible campus-based scholarships and assistance for later on, which you can ask about at the appointment. If you are serious about the service commitment (which you should be) you can also ask the National Guard about SMP. I don’t know how much of this can be available for your freshman year, though.

That’s the problems I may have trouble playing for my first year of college, but I have looked into the SMP program and that is looking like a possibility, but I would have to take the first semester off I think, which isn’t that bog of a deal for me. But I’m serious a out doing this Its been in the back of my mind since my sophomore year in High School, just never followed through. Also, do you have any other information about SMP?

No direct experience with SMP, and there may be changes coming, or differences between states. You ought to visit a National Guard office and speak with them about it.

Alright thanks for the information and I will definitely do that. The plan that I came up with for now is take out loans for my first year join ROTC to see if I can pick up the scholarship and if I don’t, go for the SMP route and do my basic over the summer of my freshman year.
