Afrotc

I know this is a USAFA forum, but anyone else pick up an AFROTC scholarship? Also, what have you decided to do? USAFA or AFROTC?

I’m still waiting to hear back from USAFA, but I’m pretty sure that I’m gonna’ take the ROTC scholarship.

I was denied a ROTC scholarship, so I had to come here. ;)

I am waiting to hear about ROTC, but I decided USAFA all the way... ;)

I got 15,000 for the ROTC, but i dunno if i'm gonna take it cuz they won't let me take a flying major. then again, i might take it and do engineering at ERAU.

I got a four year type one scholarship for AFROTC, but I turned it down today because I got into the Academy on the 28th.

I have had my appt to USAFA since January 25th, and today recieved my paperwork for NROTC (I know its not AF but AFROTC is pending), and I had planned to hold it awhile just in case, but the appointee kit says to turn the down immediately, thus I did so today as well... And I will with AFROTC as well if and when it comes in... ;)

I had an AFROTC scholarship, but then I got my appointment. It was no contest in my eyes.

gglock, you do realize that the academy does not have a "flying major" either, don't you?

...although we have a lot of Majors who fly ;)

Either way is going to land you as a Sencond Lieutenant once you graduate. The basics between the two are this: (I believe, correct me if I am wrong)

ROTC you go a civillian school and you are a military member as a secondary job
USAFA, you are already part of the military and it is your only job.
Both places, academics is placed in the highest importance.
USAFA considers itself in higher esteem because if the pride that comes out of the school.
ROTC is a lot harder to get a pilot slot out of. You have to be in the top of your class to get a pilot slot.
USAFA, if you're pilot qualified you get a pilot slot regardless of your standing in your class.
ROTC cadets are recognized after their second year where they go through their training
USAFA basic training comes before you officially enter. Six weeks and then you get recognized after a year.
ROTC you have the priveliges of a normal college kid.(Fun to be specific)
USAFA you get a loan at the end of your Junior Year (Class of 09 got $32,500 @ 0.5% loan) You are free to do with this what you please.

Like I said, either way, you're going to comission as a Second Lieutenant and you are going to be in the same standings for promotions. Either way, you are serving your country and you are doing a great thing. Best of luck for you to decide what is right for you

I wouldn't necessarily say it's harder to get a pilot slot. More competitive? Maybe. Harder? No.

The board this year, 844 cadets applied and 520 were picked up. Those that weren't picked up get moved to the alternate list (which is a pretty good chance that you'll get picked up from that). I'd say right around 65+% get a pilot slot, and usually everyone else gets picked up for CSO or ABM.

Averages for pilot selects this year:
GPA 3.27
PFA: 94.5
PCSM: 56

Bust your butt, make sure you are in the top third in your detachment, keep that GPA above a 3.0, score high on the PFA, and you are golden. Now, throw in a normal college life and compare that to USAFA. I'd have to say ROTC is a heck of a lot easier.

On the other hand, USAFA offers a lot of incentives that ROTC doesn't offer. Although, I heard that the soaring and jump program is going to be available for ROTC cadets this summer out at the Academy. Sweet deal.

Anyway, I picked up a four year Type-I for Engineering. Btw, gglock08, even if you had picked up a non-tech scholarship for an aviation major, you'd still have to pay for your actual flying, and that's what really gets you. I'd say if you want to build some hours, join a powered or soaring club. Better yet, become a CFI-G and really learn some stick and rudder skills.

Yes, I know the academy doesn't have flying besides the clubs, but I have a much greater chance of getting a pilot slot at the academy than in ROTC.

Ours borders on 100% if qualified (medically).

Aviation at the academy consists of the soaring programs, the flying team, and the aero club. Soaring has two levels: 251 (basic) and the IP program.

(and the jump programs...but that's a bit different)

WOW...

some really go insights !

I received a Type-2 ($15000) AFROTC scholarship in Dec. and received my AFA appointment in Jan.

I was a no brainer for me... USAFA all the way ,baby !!!

WOOOOOO !
:D

IMO, I think ROTC is a lot easier, than USAFA.
I strongly agree with the following:

USAFA, you are already part of the military and it is your only job.

What's everyone's stats that have received scholarships or was accepted into USAFA?

And I'd have to agree with the above poster, also.
