For anyone in the Rowan Honors program (or parent of honors students), what has your experience been like?
My D just submitted her application yesterday.
I have two kids in the Honors program. One is in his second year, the other applied at incoming, was rejected and was just accepted in fall of her freshman year (although she was allowed to take Honors course in writing)
They both love the program, but let me give feedback specifically from the more experienced one.
He is in Honors Jazz band (loves it, kid run etc). He got approved for funding for his research project thru the Honors board (neat!). He is active in the different activities. He had missed some of his volunteer hours, but had a good excuse (he was very ill) and they were understanding.
The actual perks are real. He gets to register first (this is a huge benefit). He gets access to Whitney. The courses are great, with a very small number of students and lots of interactions with the professors.
Highly recommend.
@NJRoadie , which dorms do they get?
@oceanmuzik The freshman lived this year in the new dorm (HoPoCo). The year before they lived in Evergreen, which wasn’t as sparkling as the brand new dorm, but had the advantage of a large common area for people to congregate in, and a whole lot fewer fire drills.
Upperclassman can live in Whitney, which is on the newer side. The best thing about that dorm is the layout. The student has an individual (small!) room with a passcoded door, but it is part of a larger apartment, so you have a full kitchen (no dishwasher) and living room. The four bedroom places have two bathrooms. The rooms are individual rooms, so boys and girls can live in the same apartment if they choose. Gone are the days of segregated buildings or even floors of “girls” or " boys" only.
Whitney has some classroom space as well, so there are some Honors classes actually held in the building. There is also what I would call a business center, where printers and what not are - just for the Honors kids.
There is a strong expectation to continue in the honors program that you participate - not just in a certain number of credit hour honors classes, but in volunteer service, in group outings, in clubs etc. This isn’t just all perks for no work but honestly the “work” sure seems like stuff I’d want to do anyway!
Sounds awesome! thank you so much!
My DS is also part of the Honors Program and is very happy. This is his second year living in Whitney and it is a great apartment. Next year, they hope to move into the 220 Rowan Boulevard apartments next door. Having first round class registration has been a huge perk…he has never had a problem getting class or professor of choice. Best of luck to your daughter…keep us posted!! Curious, did financial aid packages go out yet? I have a friend waiting to hear.
no, financial packages have not gone out yet
Anyone know when students are notified if they have been admitted to Honors Program? Apps were due 3/1.
When my son applied back in 2014…he was notified by mail 3/17…but note, that was 3 years ago.
Sally50, what did you have to do to apply for the honors program? Meaning like write any essays or have your school send in any paperwork?
Late March as I recall. (2015 and 2016)
@theballer - yes there were two essays and the application is for real - not everyone gets admitted who applies, even if you have stats that make their cut.
Hopefully Honors applicants will hear back this week!! Good luck to all!!
Nothing in our mailbox from the honors program this week - fingers crossed for this coming week. Acceptance into honors program may convince DS to choose Rowan. Good luck!
nothing here either… also was told we would receive financial aid package this week…but nothing…here’s hoping for next week, early next week something comes. Rowan is the last school we are waiting to hear from.
Any updates yet on the Rowan Honors Program?!
Checking the mailbox every day - nothing! Making me crazy!
I’m the same as @QueenJackie … and too add a little extra crazy, my usually regular mail is now coming at random times of the day
Ugh…my DD’s boyfriend is anxiously waiting on Honors and financial aid…my fingers are cramped from being crossed so long
waiting is the hardest part…Tom Petty
For those of you waiting, is this THE reason for choosing Rowan, or are they already going & are just waiting for this? DS is undecided. I don’t think DS will choose Rowan if he doesn’t get in the program (today he narrowed it down to Binghamton, Rowan if in the honors, or TCNJ, with strong preference for Binghamton).
