RPI Additional Merit Aid

Hi:

Our son just received notification he is accepted to RPI. He is thrilled and so are we, but now its time to crunch the money numbers. He applied ED with the hopes of receiving additional merit scholarship money on top of a $15,000 medal scholarship per year. He does not qualify for need based money. The $15,000 is terrific, but… its still not enough. Granted they have provided some “loans”, but thats not what we need.

Here are my questions:

 1. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to request/appeal additional scholarship money?

What is a reasonable amount to request? Obviously they won’t give us everything, but we certainly need more than $15,000 to cover the $50,000 tuition, room & board for each year.

Thanks in advance for those who respond

When I received my financial aid from RPI, I remember sending in an email asking for additional aid due to the fact that I had a sibling going through graduate school who wasn't able to pay for it all by herself. I believe I got a little more in loans (2 to 3 K) and they were willing to give me the laptop for free. Don't expect too much more than what you receive though.

Hope this helps.

Why did he apply ED? I thought that ED applicants do not get "extra" financial aid/scholarships because the school is assuming you can afford to go there without having to compare financial aid packages from other schools.
