RPI.College Life Questions.

I'm already committed. Before you say anything. I've done some research.

I'm just asking this question to prepare and prevent myself from any of my worries.

Troy, New York is a bad location.

The ratio is very noticeable.

The people are very diverse. Some pompous. Some Sociable.

The weather is awful but I'm from the north so I'm used to the cold weather.

Weekends are boring. But I'm REALLY used to boring weekends.

I want to hear your opinions.

I'm really scared about the area of Troy. I haven't been there but I heard a lot of people told me that the place is a scary place. That if you go there, you WILL be mugged. The environment and the work load are my biggest concern.

[] Is Troy, New York that scary of a place? Not on campus right? I can walk around on campus at night, right? Not that I'm going to but. Any advice? I don't want my parents to worry. Plus. I don't want to be mugged. I might not go to the city. I'm not that sociable.

[] How are the people there? Is a very noticeable number of these people shady? Like. In your years of RPI or in stories you have heard. How many times have you heard a person had something stolen or any crimes or any scary incidents?

[] The people. Are they still nerds? Video gamers? Friendly? or unfriendly? Describe them in the best way possible.

[] What are weekends like for you?

[] Is the academic work load that challenging for an Engineering Undergrad?

[] Is there any way I can improve my study skills? I'm actually not used to studying and I've honestly never put forth an effort but given the fact that I can graduate with a pretty high paying job opportunity. I think that will drive me.

[] Yeah. Job Opportunities. Are they really worth it? I hear a lot graduates are fought over by Top companies. They graduate with a REALLY high paying job so long as you've had working experiences/internship and decent GPA.

[] From your experience, what kind of GPA should I be looking for as an Engineering Undergrad to graduate?

I'm a pretty chill dude but I'm pretty scared of getting mugged. ANY Advice?

Haha I live like 20 minutes outside of Troy, and while it’s not that great of a place it’s not THAT bad. I mean I wouldn’t go walking around the city of Troy late at night by yourself or anything, but I don’t think you really have to worry about getting mugged. I’m sure you’ll be fine on campus, I wouldn’t worry about anyone coming from the city.

I have one friend who goes there, and she’s definetly sociable. I don’t know how the rest of the student body is, but she hasn’t had a problem making friends so I’m guessing most people are sociable. I hear they have good parties at the frat houses there too.

My friend goes to RPI, and he really enjoys it. My uncle also went there, and apparently Troy has gotten a lot better in the last 25 years or so, much like Providence has, and I really haven’t had any problems in the latter city although there are people who think it’s not a great area either.

A lot of the students are relatively nerdy, but that doesn’t preclude them being interesting or fun. This may be a good website to check out: MyLifeIsRPI[/url”>http://www.mylifeisrpi.com/]MyLifeIsRPI

Haha. Alright. I feel a lot more at ease than I was before about Troy. Now. I just need to know a little more about the academics. I haven’t studied before in High School except for AP US history. It felt like a college course. While he lectured us, I couldn’t sit there and write good notes and I usually got poor scores on the tests. I took a look at my notes and to be honest. They never helped me. So I’m a bit worried if college courses are like my US history course.

I however never took a single note in Calculus and I pretty much understood Calculus. I have never studied once and I’m pretty sure I’ll get a solid 5 on the upcoming AP exam.

So. See my problem. I don’t know how I’m going to react to college courses. So. I want to be as prepared as possible.

What was your Freshmen GPA? And you don’t have to have went to RPI. Just out of curiosity. Did you study? Did you try to take Study Skill Classes? Did it help?

Any RPI students?
