My S is looking at RPI as a possibility. We are concerned about a few things - 1. How are we going to pay for it, 2. Is there a social life with a male female ratio of 66/33? 3. How competitive is it once you're in? If there are any male students out there who can respond, we'd be most appreciative.

RPI gives pretty good financial aid, but like with all colleges you’ll just have to wait for the FA package 2. yes, there is " a social life"- keep in mind that the ratio isn’t nearly as scewed as it seems because of the large proportion of guys who just sit in their room playing video games all day 3. RPI doesn’t have a reputation for being one of those “cut throat” schools, so I’d assume the competitiveness is around the average for private schools.

I applied to RPI. Probably won’t go because of the cost, but I haven’t gotten the FA package, so I can’t say yet. When I visited, it looked like there was a lot to do, but not a lot of people doing it. I think if you took the initiative, you could be social.

I can’t comment on the competitiveness. No clue.

so many guys, what do you expect?^^

I have nothing to add to this thread but always wondered about that MS in Engineering Science degree that RPI has. It seems pretty interdisciplinary and looks interesting.

I live in the capital district area, and not to discourage u but i find that though RPI may be a good school, the area surrounding it is garbage. Gangs, guns, robberies its not a very nice neighborhood, also there is absolutely no “college town” atmosphere. A friend of mine who went there last year and graduated actually got robbed twice living relatively close to the school in an apartment. I am looking to go into engineering, but even with RPI’s stats i am not going to apply. Hope that helps!

Yeah, Troy isn’t a college town, but it isn’t as extreme as you described it. The campus itself is relatively safe, but going into town at night without a group is just asking for it. Also, haven’t heard of any incidents with a gun being involved; it’s mostly muggings.

As for the quality of life: it’s great once you find your group of friends. Clubs are plentiful so you’ll always have something to do. However, studying does take up a lot of time so at least everyone’s in the struggle together.

As for Troy, it is very old and some parts are nicer than others. There were some nice restaraunts along the river, and looked like it could be a nice place to hang. As I mentioned before though, nobody was hanging out down there.

And the campus is safely away from the ctiy.

It is nice facilities. And if you rush, you will see girls. Think of it this way: there are many guys who dont care about appearances, some who do, those jocks! So alot of the people who dont care will not appeal to girls so others will see more. And theres an all girls school near.

I just went there recently and it was different from the other schools i went to. I personally dont think i could fit in their because it seemed that a majority of the kids stayed in their dorms all day; hardly anyone went outside. Don’t get me wrong, its a great school and you could have a fun time going there but it just didnt seem right for me.
