RPI/Union Admission Decision

Hey that sounds really awesome! How is researching during the summer?

Summer research I'm just about to do. You actually start your research the spring semester of your third year. So two of the 5 weekdays you spend all day at AMC doing research, taking some research classes. Basically you learn how to do ppt presentations really well, read scientific articles, you get lectures from all kinds of doctors on different topics, and you pick up alot of random medicine. Its a really good way to learn. You get exposure to the hospital environment and pick up alot of vocabulary and terms in research. You hear alot of research from your classmates and other labs in the hospital too. In the summer, 10 weeks out of the 15 or so you do research full time and get ready to write a thesis to get your MD with Distincition in Research degree. Its a specialized program in the MD curriculum at AMC. And you get paid doing research so you don't lose anything. You also do your own project so you get to do poster presentations and get to learn alot about your topic and how it is applicable in medicine.

okay today is the email notification date and so far nothing...

haven't got anything either. weird i remember them specifically saying "friday"

Had my interview last Friday (17th) and got my acceptance email yesterday afternoon (23rd). I'm pretty sure Betty Sullivan did say at least a week, though, so your emails will probably be sent soon.

Congrats Abhi.K! What program did you get into? (Union and/or RPI)?

I applied to RPI and Union, but I only got into the RPI program...(let's just say I of told 1 of my interviewers that I "strongly preferred" RPI over Union...)

Abhi.K, you're better off anyway. The Union program is 8 years and they perform a solid 2 standard deviations below RPI program students on average on medical school exams. Where else have u gotten in in terms of undergrad schools and programs?

The only other program I might get into is the Drexel/Drexel program. Other than that, I applied to a few Ivys (which don't send decisions this early), Rice (got in ID, but don't think I'm getting an interview) and NYU (got some serious dough from them).

I have a friend currently in his second year of the RPI program, and he's pretty happy...so I think I'm gonna go with RPI (unless by some freakish chance i get into PLME or something ridiculous like that)

gansta, you have good advice. i have just been accepted to and will be attending the RPI/AMC program next fall and will be at RPI on 4/8. any chance to meet you in the am or before i leave mid-afternoon to meet you and ask for some advice?

apparently they still didnt read my file and they're doing it this week. Kinda weird considering there were only 7 people at my interview.

Hey lincolndells, no problem. I'm actually busy in the afternoon on 4/8, but the morning would be fine. We can chat and you can ask any questions you want. I don't know how we can exchange our personal info to get in touch. Let me know if you have ideas haha.

hi gansta, am is pretty light until 9:30 on 4/8. would 8:45am be ok? will buy the coffee and something in the student union for you. we could meet first floor foyer. my email is mikebla@comcast.net

thanks!!! this is very nice of you.

aw this is so cute... rpi student and prospective hooking up... for educational reasons of course

Haha happens everytime. I contacted a first year at RPI when I was a senior in HS through collegeconfidential too.

hi, the RPI and Union programs are good opportunities, I would just like to clarify something that gangsta posted about the Union students doing "2 standard deviations lower at AMC" On average this may be true (i have no way of really knowing), I know a 3rd year at AMC who went through the RPI program and he said although the students from RPI do well, the Union students are also strong academically and 2 students from Union and 3 from RPI made AOA (the big med school honor society thing like the top performers academically etc get inducted into after 2nd year) so I mean really it comes down to the fact that program kids are hard working, intelligent and can achieve their goals, each program has its pros and cons but Union kids do well at AMC also if they so choose. I just wanted to add that you may get a different science focused curriculum at RPI (my 3rd year friend really liked going through the program and felt RPI prepared him really well for med school), but the Union students do fine as well.

I completely agree with curiosity. I hope I didn't come off as if the Union kids don't do well. They do much better than the standard AMC students as well. Many go on to very well respected hospital management positions as well. One a while back was the president of Children's Hospital in Boston, affiliated with Harvard Medical. Right across the street, an RPI/AMC grad is currently president of Brigham and Women's Hospital of HMS also. Since these are bs/md programs, the students excell and do extremely well. I also think the MS or MBA 8-yr track w/ Union is excellent. They do research in a business aspect and study alot of insurance policies, etc...its a one of a kind curriculum.

How rigorous is the 3.4 gpa requirement at RPI?

sweeeeet i've been accepted into the LIM program...i was still under consideration for both RPI and Union before... but i guess they've moved to their alternate list now... :)

Can any RPI students comment on whether RPI is really as boring as everyone says it is? Also, is the courseload for medical program students very rigorous?
