Hi. I'm currently a sophomore and i honestly can't decide between RSAD and RISD. I really want to go into animation and Ringling School of Art and Design is more known for its great animation program and Rhode Island School of Design is more known for being a great art school and it's more known(name wise). I love Ringling's animation program, i checked out their portfolio and it like just blew me away. RISD's animation program on the other hand, i don't really know about. I checked out MICA and it's my 3rd choice right now. Can anyone give me help me with this? Which school is better? The pros and cons of it and stuff?

RISD has a great foundation year, but it doesn’t really have a strong reputation for animation, but Seth McFarlane went there. Haha

Anyways, Ringling has a strong animation program. MICA is honestly more of a school for fine arts/illustration.
I’d actually suggest looking into CalArts, Sheridan, SVA and USC if you really want to go into animation.

Daughter got into both, picked RISD, but that is her choice. If you do decide on Ringling, their office was very clear that the portfolio should be almost all observational pieces. But if animation is the way you want to go, you def want to apply there. Visit though, that was deciding factor for my D, also look for a post by Taxguy, that had all the top animation programs listed.

@spokes i looked into risd’s animation and rsad’s animation and apparently, rsad doesn’t really allow for a lot of creativity freedom in their animation program which is kind of a problem for me…
@ethomasnj i’ll make sure to do that c:

My daughter went to RISD, but I live near Ringling. The proximity of Ringling was one of the reasons my daughter chose RISD Also, she is a fine artist and we were impressed with RISD’s liberal arts offerings and their reputation. That being said…Ringling’s animation program is incredible. I would recommend Ringling over RISD for animation.
