I understand that SpudmanKA but don't some MIT adoffs read our RSI applications? I know matt mcgann does, so I'm wondering how he gets it. I guess VA is the distribution center.

Oops, I forgot to mention my field : subfield :: astronomy : astrobiology, specifically exoplanets

corinao, i didnt apply last year, i decided not to graduate early

kyle, i applied but i have no clue when we get a response (prob. around the same time as new Rickoids). haha, i just remembered the purity test...and YOUR score...geez way to bring the average WAY down ;)
i want to be part of the 2 am july 4th crew! hehe oh the things they'll do...

yes, fourth of july kinda set the tone for much of my reputation....only to be augmented after the purity test.

i didn't think marshall would struggle so much..... but, that's a different story to be told to the Rickoids of 2007, and ONLY the Rickoids of 2007.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: When CEE says they must have all application materials on Feb 9th
is there an implied time
cause based on today's events
my application might have to be "same-dayed" to McLean, VA

I'm so relieved... my parents sent out the form this morning through overnight fed-ex, and it should reach McLean on time tomorrow, hopefully at least. The town's really close to Washington DC isn't it? It's like on the outskirts. So if it takes about 4 hours just to drive from NJ to DC, then the mail should theoretically also arrive on time... not to mention it's called overnight fed-ex. The tracking says that it's left Cartaret, NJ already.

I can't believe I don't have to worry about apps anymore! This feels so surreal. It's like a weight's been lifted off my chest, but I'm also kind of sad that I won't come home to the envelope sitting on my desk. Now all I have to do is wait a month and a half for the good (hopefully) news. =)

ActuarialDJ, I think as long as it gets there before office hours are over (probably 5pm), you're good. It's still following the instructions, isn't it? :-)

poignantpianist, you only wish you could have the lovely inside jokes that we do....

Saffaron, wait till college apps.....then the RSI app will seem like a vacation.

Optimization, if you made it to the USABO, CEE should have you on file anyway, because they sponsor it. If not, I'm sure they'll figure it out.

RSI has a weak application compared to Governor's School and Summer Science Program (SSP), for instance # of teacher recs, # of essays, style of essays, data requests, etc. I am surprised they don't make the application more rigorous to aid themselves in selecting students. With such a lax application, it will be hard to distinguish two really good people.

Although... I think your field and subfield and state you live in or represent makes a difference. I guess... if you live in Pennsylvania you first compete with your own Pennsylvanians and then with people who have similar fields of interest. After all, they can't have 50% of students doing bio-related projects...

Ah college apps... if I don't get into RSI, that's what I'm going to be spending my summer doing in addition to going back to the lab and doing some more research.

Coolphreak: Honestly speaking, I liked taking chem class ten thousand more times than I liked taking bio, though the two subfields I ended up putting down were neuroscience (from past research experience) and cancer biology (personal interest). I still haven't decided if I want to become a researcher or a traditional doctor, especially after I found out that in order to get into certain med schools, you're required to take Physics MCAT but not chemistry… I absolutely detest physics.

Yeah... I know. It is pretty sad. It's not even that I hate it in the way that I hate, for example, eating broccoli. It's more like the fact that I can't understand its concepts easily, and it doesn't make logical sense in the "common sense" sort of way. I guess I'm just not a physics person, haha, I can't think outside the box in hypothetical situations. There are stuff I really enjoy in class, like figuring out circuits and projectiles, but the rest like circular motion and torque are pains in the neck. If I wanted to be honest, I'd also mention the pride factor... how it was a really rude awakening when I had to actually study for phsyics in order to get my usual grades, when before, I just got bio and chem easily without making much of an effort... I'm so bad =P

woohoo!!!!!! engineering!!!!! we never have enough engineers at RSI!!

Applications due today!!!! unless you live in the DC area and can personally deliver your application to CEE, it better not be in your possession anymore.

I'm so upset right now. Guess what kind of nasty shock I got today when I found out my school didn't send out my transcript? I had to rush to the post office during lunch and pay yet another small fortune to have that shipped using overnight express even though tomorrow's Saturday, and it technically doesn't make a difference anymore... I hope CEE will accept it and still go over my app. I worked so hard on it, and it would suck if the late transcript is the only reason why I get disqualified!
