Rsi 2007

i suppose the big states or NJ, NY, CA, MA, PA

but then some KS, OK, ID and ZZ and XY and YY and XXY

XY and YY? Male and female? what?

we need an rsi chatroom or something o.O

You'll get a chatroom if you go....

Why get a chatroom when we can all just talk here? =)

If we get our postcards back (if we included one), can we assume that our application was complete and received on time?

I believe that's the point of the postcard, right?

I never sent one, but maybe they'll write on your postcard if you're missing something....

perhaps corina or yin yin can help answer this question?

and yes, who needs a chatroom when we have CC? Once the Rickoids are all identified and organized, it'll be possible for a lot more efficient communication than this. Just be patient, all ye applicants. Now that the decision is out of your hands, you may go and commit your hardworking minds to other more important things for the time being. Life is about so much more than what summer program you did or didn't get into. I wasn't basing my summer plans at all on whether I was going to get into RSI. It's just something I decided to try and it ended up happening. But please don't make this the be all or end all of your high school career.

You are still ALL AMAZING candidates!!!! and it's an honor to help you out.

tear

how kind of you to let me come

OMG I am kicking my self right now........

Do you think we could have superscored our PSAT scores?

like I took the PSAT in 9th, 10th, and 11th...

my writing was like a bazillion times better in 9th than in 11th?

could I have used that with my other two scores from 11th?

not to be mean, but it looks as though if your "writing was like a bazillion times better in 9th than in 11th", your 9th grade score may have just been a fluke.

so ... you discredit yourself either way, even if you use that with your other two scores from 11th grade

i thought they just wanted our junior year PSAT score, not a composite of the best scores from 9th, 10th, and 11th. it would be nice though, if i could have used my 10th grade writing score.

Hm, I only submitted by SAT scores, because my PSATs were really low. The brochure said PSATs OR SATs right? I hope that won't count against me.

the big cutoff is 220 (PSAT). its kind of cheating if you use SAT scores to cover up for low PSAT scores. unless you can spit out a really good excuse.... as to why your PSAT scores were low... the rules are the rules-- who knows? maybe your higher SAT scores were a fluke.

but with this many applicants and a lower acceptance rate than MIT, it is truly ones own fault for <220 PSAT junior year, missing parts to the application, etc. NO EXCUSES! plz.

they know everyone took the PSAT, and they did expect that score.
if my PSAT were low, and my SAT high, I would have sent in both.

I don't see how it's cheating; I had no intentions of trying to "cover up" anything. I sent in only SAT scores because I thought you could send in either one since it said PSATs (or SATs, ACTs). If anything, I just read the application wrong. I certainly don't need to make excuses for what I did intentionally, and I'm not blaming it on anyone else. The reason why I did better on SATs was because I studied hard, not because I suddenly became magically lucky that day. And personally, I think I deserved my scores.

And if I don't get in because of that silly mistake on my part, then I'll accept it. Fair is fair. Sorry if I offended anyone by wondering.

that came out rather rudely on my part. what i meant to say was... you probably DID study hard and thus earned higher SAT marks--i'll give you the benefit of the doubt--but how can you prove this is so? what they're looking at is PSAT. no matter how high your SAT is, the rules are the rules.

sending your sat score instead of psat is not cheating. the app says you can send either psat, sat, or act scores (or any combination of these). plenty of people did not send in their psat scores, and cee doesn't care as long as you send in one standardized test score.

as for the "rules are the rules" statement, if that were so, i wouldn't have gotten in, and neither would many, many others. don't get so caught up in these technicalities. if you don't get in, it's not because you sent in your sat or act scores over the psat, or something trivial like that.

hm you're right: it does say PSAT or SAT or ACT! however, it doesnt give you numbers for SAT, only PSAT and ACT.

thats the problem with college apps today: adcoms feel like following the rules sometimes and being fair, and sometimes they scrap the rules and to heck with it all.

I think it's important to remember that these folks WANT to offer this opportunity to promising young scientists, and are looking for as many reasons to say "yes" as possible. Ditto the college admissions officers. I doubt the adcoms get into this line of work because they enjoy rejecting people. If I had to hazard a guess, many of them loved their college experiences and want to share that with others. I've read Matt McGann's blogs -- you can't tell me he doesn't love his job!

As I tell my DS1 after a final exam, PSAT, application, etc., it's done, there's nothing you can change now, so move forward and we'll see how the results turn out when it's time.

And don't forget to look into making other plans for the summer! All of you who applied have terrific credentials and should be able to find something fun/interesting/remunerative/challenging to do (or some combination of same) should RSI not pan out.

if "these folks WANT to offer this opportunity to promising young scientists" then why not provide more opportunities? For example, the summer science program (SSP) opened a second campus in order to accommodate the competitive admissions. RSI's acceptance rate does a disservice to young people all over and quite frankly, like you said, I am using it as a back up to governor's school because it is such a crap shoot.

Oh, I can't say that I'm not relieved that sending in just SATs was okay. Thank you Corinao.

I don't think it's at all fair to say that they're doing a disservice to anyone. Getting a completely free six-weeks at one of the best universities in the country and having the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing researchers is probably a once-in-a lifetime chance for most high school students. I don't think RSI is funded by any governmental organizations; they rely on the donations and patronages of people who want to create opportunities for us, and I'm already incredibly grateful that they even have this program.

Sure, the acceptance rate is extremely low, but the program is just like any selective university. It provides the opportunities for people who truly deserve them. I've seen on another thread that it says that Rickoids have a certain something that makes them special, and I have faith that the admission officers can pick that out. Would I be ecstatic if they increase the amount of people they take each year? Sure, who wouldn't? But I'm not going to expect them to. If I get in, it'll be extra special. If I don't, I still have my nice, quiet lab to go back to during the summer. =)

Out of curiosity, what does everyone else have as a backup plan in case RSI doesn't work out?
