Rsi 2012

I did not send an SAT score, and I was accepted.

@luoscioly, thanks for the quick response. Could you pls. post your stats ? What did you apply for ? What are your other credentials?

I’d prefer not to give out a laundry list of my stats/credentials. However, I will say that I applied with no prior research experience, no international olympiads, and only three AP classes (one science). Frankly, I am shocked that I got accepted, given that they reject people with research/ISEF/USAMO/college accolades.

@Luoscioly, thanks for your response. You must have something that stood out in your application like your essays or other non-stereotype-ecs or recommendations. best wishes.

Are you of a minority LuoSciOly? And also congrats! :)

By “minority” do you mean my racial background? If so, it doesn’t matter, because there is no place on the RSI application to indicate your race.

@atomicbaseball, do you remember around what time you were notified that you were moved from the Alternates to Participants list?

Hey everyone, I was accepted a few days ago and I just thought I would stop by and let you all know (if anyone has been counting for the 80 or so people). Where is everyone else from? Anyone else from Kentucky?

Did anyone who selected Computer Science as the top subject in the RSI application get in?

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted.

Might there be a bias towards chemistry and biology applicants? If it helps, I was applying for Computer Science, second choice being Electrical Engineering.

I got rejected – do you guys think it would have helped a lot to have published a paper or gotten awards? My academics are solid: GPA 4.1 (out of 4.3), 2330 on the SATs, 223 on PSATs, taking AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP Chem, and already took Calc BC.

Thanks.

congrat Cardinal11!

did they give a deadline for responding?
Just curious for when the alternates might start being decided (they said mid may I think, which seems kind of late)

@pegusis/Arukwoof: I was indeed notified mid-May. Apparently I was selected at the last possible minute - if whoever dropped out had notified them any later they wouldn’t have filled the space. I’d imagine that they try to fill the spaces more-or-less as soon as someone turns them down, but I don’t really know. And I’m sure there’s a response deadline, but I’m not sure what it is. Probably early May.

We’re supposed to email our acceptance by March 15th actually…

There are more biology projects than anything else. I also heavily suspect that there are more people listing biology as one of their fields of interest than anything else.

I doubt you have a significant advantage in acceptance rate due to a certain field selection.

so if the acceptances are due by mid march and the notifications are done by mid may, there are two possibilities:

They meet again to determine who gets any of the available slots (if there are any).

They already have a ranking that they go through and give people time to respond (less likely).

Weird that there is that 2 month lag. Any other ideas?

@Arukwoof

Yes, I was told March 15th as well.

My fields are #1 - Mechanical Engineering and #2 - Computer Science

I don’t know if that gave me an advantage (I don’t have any crazy accomplishments or anything) but I do feel as though my essays strongly showed my interest in the fields I selected.

Does anyone know how they choose from the pool of alternates (reevaluation, geographic location, …)? And how many alternates were chosen this year?

They do apparently completely reevaluate those in the alternate pool, I believe.

And I’m going to assume mid-May is more the latest that alternates will hear, not exactly when alternates will hear, so even though the reply-back date is March 15th people may yet drop out after that and if they drop out before mid-May then they’ll select an alternate to replace them.

Again, just a guess, but it would seem reasonable.

Happy pi day, everyone!

In one year, it’ll be (some of) us anxiously awaiting 6:28 PM for MIT decisions :0 So close, yet so far away…

Hi again everyone! Thought I’d let you know all us alumni are starting to hear about staff positions. I’ll be your tech assistant! Can’t wait to meet you all! :D
