RSI 2015

so many notifications lol…

@sunstate I really hope we know by Tuesday…and they don’t wait until next week

Anyone from iowa?

is it generally true that they will favor kids who are geared toward computational science mainly because those projects are able to be done within the short time frame of rsi?

To future rickoids - PROMYS ‘13 and’ 14 alum here. Don’t embarrass yourselves in the Frisbee match against us this year

yo ima already be preppin for dat match doe

Ugh the wait is absolutely horrendous.

Anybody trying for any other programs?

Anyone else applying from Alabama???

@multiverse7 I think most people apply RSI will apply others knowing RSI acceptance rate is near 1%.

^well not exactly. It’s higher than 1%. You’re competing with the people within your state, since your state usually gets 1 or 2 spots. For example, if your state has 15 applicants, you’re competing with 14 other people, so your acceptance rate is a little higher than 1%.

@minirafa‌ The overall acceptance rate is still around 1%. Acceptance rates by state may be higher, but claiming an acceptance rate of 1/15 under-represents the difficulty of getting in. In any case, if your state only has 15 people applying then you still do not have a 1/15 “chance” of getting in, which is and important distinction.

Since they try to take 1 from each state, I’m not following why they wouldn’t have a 1/15 chance of getting in.

Also, where are you guys getting the 1% number from? I thought it was more like 4.5% last year.

@Multiverse7 Only 33 states were represented last year… so it could happen that all 15 students from the hypothetical state get rejected.

I thought of that but if you are even semi-competitive, your chance of acceptance from one of the underrepresented states is sooo much higher than coming from a state like where I am from.

@Multiverse7‌ what state are you from? Is Alabama a weak state?

NY and I really don’t know. I would imagine so but it only takes one superstar…

@Multiverse7‌ “Since they try to take 1 from each state, I’m not following why they wouldn’t have a 1/15 chance of getting in.”

Because there is no probability involved. There is a fixed “chance” of you getting in–a probability of either 1 or 0 but you don’t know which. You either were the person they picked or you weren’t. Unless you were deferred, then there would be some chance involved, but overall I was just trying to emphasize that accepting 1/15 people does not truly mean you have a 1/15 chance.

1% comes from 50 accepted out of around 4,000 applicants, roughly 50/5000 or 1%.

nohope

guys tomorrow may be the day… good luck

i wish they gave us a definitive date on which results would be announced…the anticipation is killing me
