@DaBulldog Yeah I am! Hopefully her and I get in and no one else! Fingers crossed but I’m not very optimistic. Good luck!
I have a feeling it’s going to come out today.
I really need to know quickly so that I can decide whether or not I can go to Canada to take a physics test.
._. .–. |:
DC is having a snow storm today, the US Government is closed, I don’t think they will be working today.
@minirafa Since Ms. Ballestero took the time to respond back to an email and even put a specific date that decisions would not come out before then, I see no reason to speculate she is not being forthright. If anything, they are probably losing another day today because of the snowstorm - pushing the decisions out even further. Just sit tight, the decisions will come out when they come out.
Does anyone know that in the past students got accepted by RSI also got accepted by other prestigious programs like Simons, SIMR…? I read on CC Simons 2015 thread that these programs talk to each other. If you get a “likely” and show interest in one program, then you are out from others. Is this true? I believe most students are more interested in RSI. If RSI announces the results after March 15 and students are forced to respond “still interest” to the “likely” program and consequently get excluded from RSI. It is so not right nor fair to the student.
Do people actually get likely letters from these summer programs?!?
@gsckmom I believe it is an e-mail from Simons, it does not ask student to commit at all, but does ask whether he/she is interested in a certain professor lab Simons matched for him/her. I believe almost all students will answer yes which is a true and honest answer unless they are already accepted by their preferred program (say RSI). Yet if you read the following link, Simons seems assume if students say they are interested, then they are committed and will be excluded from other programs (ex. RSI…etc) because programs do compare notes. It is so strange. I understand program coordinators spend lots of time finding the right lab for students and PIs would like to lock down students asap. If they are comparing students, then the most prestigious program (RSI) should announce results first so that students can act accordingly and Simons should wait until RSI results come out then ask students about their interest. just my 2 cts.
I think everyone may be over thinking all of this–more than even the people involved in making these decisions. All these programs are highly competitive…Simons and RSI pretty much on the same level as far as prestige and get the same types of students (keep in mind Simons is much smaller with only 35-40 students per year and STILL represents at least 10% of the 40 STS finalists each year). I don’t think they “communicate” specifically but to be sure they have a lot of overlap in the applicants they get. Neither program needs to beg for qualified applicants. Quite the contrary. I really don’t think @love2cheeses that the potential inconvenience of the program’s individual timetables and processing times should be looked at as anything unfair. They are all trying their best to vet applicants and find the best fits for their program and the best matches for research mentors. This all takes time. And manpower. And getting faculty to review applications which may not be so easy. And issues with weather etc play a role. The “likely” letters are not to back anyone into a corner, they are to help the program work out their plan for the summer. I think the sentiment that was trying to be conveyed in the other link was that we applicants should all realize that we affect each other and not try to hold spots in general in a program if we really have no intention of attending because it may potentially take the opportunity away from someone else. That how I read it all. Just to be aware that these are very coveted positions and be respectful of that when communicating with programs.
Looks like the schools around RSI are still snowed under and closed.
@meaa7130 I am applying from Alabama! I think there’s another user, jhgong, that also applied from Alabama.
Where are you from in Alabama? @ashkaush
@deadwilly I just sent maite a quick email about one of the awards I won this weekend and she seemed happy to hear about it
i thought that maite previously said not to send more updates? hm…
@swimmygirl123 congratulations, that’s terrific!
@BasedBioGod - that maite was happy for her doesn’t mean it affected her admissions outcome. Decisions could already be a done deal by now.
I hope the results come out within the next week. :-/
oh true…ahhh it would be nice though. i got few good awards…oh well
i guess woudn’t mean much in comparison to the international olympiads ill be competing with haha
I’m putting my Monopoly money on the 17th. Please let me be right!!!
But they’ve been releasing it in a Tues/Thurs/Tues schedule. I doubt they’d change it, but its always a possibility.
I guess we can all agree sometime next week?
