So, I unofficially got into Simons and even though it is not nearly as well known as RSI, I would have most likely turned down RSI if I had gotten in (I didn’t). I’m certain that the professor at Stony Brook and the work that he’s doing will be an ideal fit for me. Still, it would have probably been really hard to turn down the RSI name (but the right thing to do).
I now have a chance to do something really special in the field I am passionate about. I am almost grateful I didn’t have to make the choice.
@poisonivy20 Oops, I didn’t mean to agree with this statement. I was just agreeing that the admitted kids just got a golden ticket to a top college. Actually, I know of a Rickoid who got rejected to their first choice which was Harvard (but is happy at that other school on the Left Coast).
@agupte Also, RSI is not biased toward URMs, because they don’t even ask for race on the application. MITES is “biased” toward URMs I suppose you could say, but then it’s called MINORITY Introduction to Engineering and Science.
But that being said, you are correct in saying that rejection from RSI in no way should discourage a person from pursuing his or her scholastic interests, because 1) your interest in research is legitimate whether or not you are admitted to RSI, 2) the undeniable drive for excellence that made you apply to RSI in the first place is still a part of you, and 3) RSI admits 50 students; there are FAR more students than that at any top school.
Sure, those of us who got rejected are missing out on a great opportunity, but that’s all that the rejection is. It’s not a reflection on us as students or as people. Be proud of the fact that you even applied. Don’t panic, don’t beat yourself up and do the awesome things that you are capable of doing guys! (and those of you who got accepted–do the awesome things you are capable of doing too! plus have a fun summer. haha)
“I emailed RSI over the weekend about not receiving a notification and I received a response from Maite this morning. There are no more emails going out. If you did not receive your results you need to email them and provide them with your name, address, and date of birth and she will get back to you with result. Sorry guys. As suspected, a server issue. Good luck!”
@sunstate I emailed her to get my result on sunday and heard back yesterday. And even though my notification was delayed from everyone else by 3 days, my deadline to accept is still tomorrow, March 18, like everyone else. So you might want to get on it. Or don’t. Then you can make some other people in this thread, who got waitlisted, potentially very happy!
Hi guys! I’ve just joined this chat, and I applied to the program. I was confused because the application says people should hear back, and this is a direct copy and paste from the application, in the “Last week in March: Students notified of selection by e-mail.” So should we have received a reply by now? I know many of you have emailed RSI, and I want to do so as well if I need to, but I just don’t want to annoy them if they just haven’t responded to everyone yet or something.
