RU placement

Hello, I am an incoming biochem major who did extremely poor on her placement exam. I took algebra my sophomore year and did the dumb thing of not going over any work and just winging my placement exam. I was therefore placed in elementary algebra.

I am planning on taking the proficiency exam for elementary algebra and then taking intermediate algebra this summer so in the fall I can begin with precalc at RU. My question is how hard is the elementary algebra proficiency exam? The counselors were very pessimistic about them and told me most students fail them. I am currently in AP Statistics and know I do not belong in such a low level class, I just made the dumb idea of winging a material I haven't seen in 2 years.

Since i cannot take chem until I am in precalc this is extremely stressful for me because I do not want to get left behind so if anyone can tell me how hard the exam is/how to review for it I would be extremely grateful. Thank you for your help!

The math department website for Elementary Algebra has the class syllabus and review problems for the final exam, so this will probably be useful for you. <a href=“Error Page - 404”>Error Page - 404; Otherwise I really don’t know anything about the proficiency exams. From what I have been told, it is essentially just the final exam from the course.

Keep in mind that if you want to start in Pre Calc at Rutgers, you really need to know basic algebra to the point that it’s always in your head and you don’t need to refresh yourself on it. It’s fundamental for every math class you will take and most science courses as well throughout college. Especially if you intend to major in something like biochem, you really should not have placed into elementary algebra.
