I'm going to Exeter next year...
And I DID read the book "Prep". But the person's personal conflicts in that book had to do with the fact that she was so totally self-consicious and self-absorbed in trying to make sure everyone approved of here etc., NOT the school itself.

In fact, I found that book quite annoying to read.

You also don't understand. Well, you soon will.

It doesn't matter. Highschool is the same everywhere. Full of drama. And you will get self concious. And the school itself is full of people like that.

Mmm. HS is full of drama even if you don't want it to be. Most people lose a friend to the DC. Most people get in fights with people in the dorm. Most people have problems in relationships becasue they live with their bf's or gf's or whatever.

I love Exeter. I wouldn't change it for anything.

It's okay. Most preps taht come in don't understand until they're here. Then you will. Drama is inevitable at any highschool.

There are 3 types of people at Exeter.

Those who come here to get away from problems at home.

Those who come here because their parents made them come here.

And those who come here to learn.

Either way, drama in inevitable. HIghschool's a *****, no matter where you go.

Also, my councelour told me this. 1/3 of the student body here at Exeter has either gone or is going to psychiatric therapy. Don't those numbers sound awfully high?

Think about it. YOu're putting a bunch of teenager in one place. It's like "The Real World" on MTV. Drama is bound to happen. YOu put them all in one place and stress them out about college and life etc.

I'm not saying I hate Exeter, so don't put words in my mouth.

Here at Exeter, we have a system that's like a court.

You have a friend speak, a faculty friend speak, your advisor speak, and you yourself speak. You basically present your case, your advisor says how you are around the dorm, your faculty friend says how you are in class, and your friend says how you are around people. They look at your past record. They then decide whether you get probation or RTWed.

RTW - Requiered to Withdraw.

About 1% of the school is RTWed a year.

Also, there are people that go on Med or Dean's leave. Which means they leave for a term because they're stressed out.

HS is not ALL like that. It's just one of the worst parts of HS.

I wouldn't know, but I'd say theres bound to be drinking at any high school. (There is at Andover, I know that).

As you say, maybe I'm naive (I kinda do doubt it though), but I don't think you HAVE to get involved with the drama at Exeter if you don't want to.

haha. Okay - to calm the drama. I'm a friend of KnK (it's a guy, btw) in real life - I go to Exeter, too. I disagree that Prep was at all relevant, but yes. There is a lot of drama at Exeter. High school drama - magnified by the intensity of 24/7 contact. It's...actually kind of fun to experience, if you can keep perspective on it and take everything with irony. It's like...a heightened version of typical teenage life, with extra-high highs and extra-low lows. So yes, there is LOADS of drama at Exeter.

I wouldn't really have it any other way.
Exeter's an amazing place - I love it. I love the intensity of the classes, the discussions, the friends I've made, the real-ness of people who CARE about things and can still have fun (this saturday, for example, I ate a picnic lunch on the quad discussing the nature of art, truth, and beauty with a friend of mine, only to switch topics to girl-talk/crushes...then had a wild waterballoon fight and took fun photos of us making weird faces.)

Haha. Yeah, KnK was being very harsh - but don't take him seriously. (No, Sergio, I'm not taking you seriously.) He talks like that in real life, and we all love his endearing *****iness...so yeah, context. Don't worry - he calls me worse all the time, and he's my friend. (Sergio, I love you. Stop being mean to all the prospective people. <3. PS. When you read this, come find me in the library comp lab.)

So yeah. If you come to Exeter (collective you), drama will be there. Chill out - it's going to make the four years or whatever you spend there excellent. First time to chill-out...encountering Sergio.

Exeter's great, if you love that sort of INTENSITY, from the academic to the social. Yeah, Exeter!

Tara (ajadedidealist) is right. I'm the biggest ***** on campus. LOLOLOL. No seriously, it's true. I'm just too cynical. ><

And she's prety much right when it comes to Exeter. That's exactly why I love it.

wow things that i never knew ;)
exeter was my dream, but even with 96 ssat, excellent recs, and pretty standing-out things (being homeschooled for a year, having designed business cards and newsletters, skipping two years of math, etc), they didnt accept me. i'm beginning to feel that i shouldn't have sent my tax returns (which prooved that my family basically live in a cave) to them.

I got a 96 ssat and stuff. And I live in a trailer. no joke. lololol Oh wellz. Try again. DO IT! You seem pretty chill and Exeter needs more chill people rather than people that are all preppy and OMG I M TOTALLY GONNA GET 2 GO 2 HARVARD LOLOLOL

Nah, it sounds pretty cool and all but things are going fine for me in England at the moment. Plus, I wouldn't qualify for financial aid and my parents wouldn't be overly keen on spending 40k/year on top of college. Maybe I'll catch up with some Exeter boys in college though - if they can survive street life 'til then lol...
