Yea, exercise habits can evolve. Years ago when I did VHS exercise tapes, one with with Jane Fonda for stretching. She was probably about age 60 in it. She commented that her days of just “going for the burn” were done… she had come to appreciate the value of having stretching routines too. It’s fun to see her now, decades later, still active and acting .
Yes Jane is a fantastic role model for staying in shape. I want to be her!
Did you use a curved manual treadmill like this? The gym where I am member has one like this and I use it almost daily.
Very similar - the Woodway arc. Our gym has 2. I find doing intervals on that and the rower is helping me build my endurance. Previously I was fearful of sprinting on it - and I use the term “sprinting” loosely - but doing the weights and the flexibility stuff I should have been doing all along have helped with my balance and confidence that I’m not going to end up a youtube video.
The Woodway is the Rolls Royce of CMT’s. I’d love to try one someday. I’d get one for home, but they’re very expensive.
I’ve been mostly recovered from Covid but no running…. and some days lazy about walking. Today at 2pm I saw my step count was at 462. “Hmmm… well it would be easy to at least double that”. Now at 5200 steps because there was a lovely stretch of sunshine to warm the glum 50 degree and breezy day. Sometimes it’s all about tricking myself into heading out the door.
Honestly, it’s all about the first step out the door or to wherever the fitness equipment is. Once you get your gear and take that step, it’s rare you are going to turn around. Am I wrong?
Sounds like you had a decent dose of Covid! How’s your husband?
Really happy to say that husband has (at least so far) avoided Covid symptoms. My strong symptoms started 9 days ago and lasted about 3 days, though I had what I thought were “allergies” day or two prior.
I did a 12-mile virtual bike ride yesterday and a 14.4-mile ride today. Today’s route was very hilly, through a volcano. And I was on a Big Wheel part of the time. It’s so fun. I finished 498th out of 555 bikers, and I think that was just because some people dropped out, ha. But I did it! It wasn’t technically a race, but they still tell you where you finish.
I looked it up, and considering variables such as my weight, I have to bike about 3.5 miles to make the equivalent of running 1 mile.
We just finished a vigorous stroll through Georgetown. It’s a beautiful day here in DC. Had to get “some” exercise in before brunch!
Equivalent to what? The # of calories burned? To get your heart rate up??
Caloric expenditure.
Just an interesting factoid…
I have both a very good indoor/spin bike and an outdoor bike.
My Apple Watch gives me way more points for outdoor riding than indoor (and outdoors I was riding a very flat path).
Your interesting factoid got me wondering how Applewatch calculates calories. (I don’t have one but was still curious). Per Dr Google….
That’s really interesting. I don’t think too much about calories burned unless I’m trying to hit a target when I’m rowing. It’s exercise no matter how you look at it. Ahead of everyone on the couch and all that.
Same here. I just get whatever exercise “credit” that MyNetDiary app lists for a particular exercise/duration.
Ok, I fib slightly … claiming my normal 5k/3.1mile run around the lake is at 5mph (263cal), even though slightly slower. On some days I add a few more km at a slower pace and log the 4mph running option (which would be 225 cal for 3.1 mile, but I generally don’t go that far on part2 unless I have a lot of time and it is Perfect temp).
In summer, I ride my bike over to the lake. I log “Bicycling, <10 mph, leisure, to work or for pleasure”. My 3 miles round trip is only 52 calories. Mostly I’ve been doing this summer Bike Commute in retirement to save gas/emissions and add a bit of non-impact variety to my day. But I suppose it is worth “a small cookie” of calories.
I find the Apple Watch pretty consistent for distance and calories burned - though I also am not concerned with tracking that. I generally know that a mile run is about 100 calories. A mile walked it probably 70ish.
I personally am more motivated by distance or time spent In active movement.
I don’t know about that info above that talks about the iPhone. It’s certainly not a given that people have their iPhone with them during exercise if they have their watch.
I love my Apple Watch !
Interesting. On my indoor bike today, I was supposedly going up the equivalent of a hill with a 5-8% slope. It sure felt like I was working hard.
How do we measure improved fitness? Sorry for the lengthy strand.
Helpful article - good points. Thanks!
Typically I’ve have low blood pressure (100/60 or less) but high pulse rate. I was going to try to check pulse… then realized I should just find our pulsometer from Covid crisis times.
