I understand that as soon as a thread like this is started, people are re-directed to Greek Rank, but Greek Rank is horrible and biased! I know the same can be said for users on here but I feel like CC isn't as saturated with Greeks.

So, I am rushing in August at UT and am worried about some reputations having to do with sororities at UT. Any answers you can provide will be helpful, biased or not.

The "Big 6": opinions?

Finally, which would you like to be a sister in (if you were into that type of thing)?
I really am hopeful that there is such thing as a classy sorority, but I'm losing hope.

Bash me all you want for not waiting until recruitment to find these things out on my own, but I don't want to buy into a perfect front that girls put up and be stuck with a house of coke heads.

You may get some responses, but I think your energy is mis directed

Quite frankly, very, very few PNMs will have much choice of where they are invited back to, or where they get a bid. They call it ‘mutual selection’ but really the sororities are selecting, and the PNMs are choosing from these options after the sororities have made their decisions. This is not just for UT but for many other schools.

UT rush is incredibly competitive due to the high number of legacies and in state students who already have connections with the chapters, plus the number of PNMs who only seem to want one of six chapters. Most houses will already have an idea of girls they like before rush even starts.

If you already know people in the houses, then you wouldn’t be on here or Greekrank asking for reputations. You would already know what the chapters are like. So my assumption is that you are going into rush without knowing (m)any girls in the chapters. My fear is that rather than focusing on things you can control (conversation skills, brushing up your resume, getting recs in order, rush wardrobe, grooming) you are looking for something that quite frankly, you are going to have very little control over at all.

Go to greekchat.com, search for UT threads and READ the advice provided. I would spend time reading some of the recruitment stories on UT to understand just how brutal the cuts can be

Focus on what you can control, enjoy getting to meet new people and stop stirring up trash talk

No one here should discuss sorority reputations, and certainly not name names, because frankly with over 200 girls in each house you really can’t pigeonhole them that way. Girls are as classy as they want to be, the letters on their chest does not effect that. As long as you realize that the average frat guy is not out for meaningful relationships (especially freshman and sophomore years) the better chance you have at not falling prey to the “you are so special” garbage.

With that out of the way, SoccerGirlNYC had some pretty sage advise. At this point I have to assume you have already submitted all of your letters of recommendations and done the required paper work for recruitment. Recruitment may officially start in August, but the active members of the sororities have been “behind the scenes” recruiting since the winter and some incoming freshmen have been recruitment targets for years. They have been looking at Facebook…(make sure yours is very, very clean) they have called friend of friends to get the inside scoop on girls that interest them. They are at orientation and are attending the Frat parties and they are watching you. They may not talk to you, because they are not suppose to, but they are watching YOUR behavior.

If you are coming to UT really raw, meaning no greek connections what so ever, you have a very large uphill battle. Greek Rank is no place to be–purely a blood bath by people who know nothing about UT Greek Life. Every house at UT has something to offer. The “Big 6” is a phrase coined by Texas Monthly back when gas was 25 cents a gallon. Some of those houses still hold clout, but others are slipping. Some rely on their old reputation, even though their reality is not quite as shiny. Then there are houses that are true gems that don’t rely “old” reputation, but work on building a stronger and stronger sisterhood.

You will find some houses that have crazy pride and splash their letters all over the place and you will find some that don’t really care. You will find some houses that balance GPA, socials and charity work and some that don’t do that so well. You will find some houses that feel welcoming, some that don’t and that all depends on you as a person. What works for one person may not work for another.

No matter what anyone says, being fashionable and polished matter. Having strong communication skills matter. Having stellar grade matter. They matter more to the houses with the top GPAs and sometimes even more to the ones that don’t have top GPAs but want to move up on that list. Every house has an objective and will recruit accordingly.

If you want to learn more about each house before recruitment, visit their individual websites. Most post photos and will tell you about themselves. But be very careful not to fall in love with anyone specifically. That will only spell disaster for yourself.

OP…Please, Please,Please stay off of Greek Rank…most of the people that post on that site arent even greek and have no idea what they are taking about…I really really wish that site didn’t exist!
Greek Chat is a pretty good source of information. Just do a search for threads about UT. There is some good advice there about recruitment in general also. Just be aware that some of the posters on there are a little “cranky” and need to get a life…

My biggest piece of advice is to go into recruitment at UT with an OPEN MIND…I cannot stress this enough…please try not to listen to other girls and thier opinions of the houses, especially if they are negative. Most likely the girl that says she will only go XYZ or AB will be cut by those two houses and she will either eat crow or drop out. THERE IS NOT A BAD HOUSE AT UT…please dont drink the kool aide They all have mixers with fraternities, date parties, formals, etc.

Greek life at UT has been wonderful for my daughter, but she had to go in with an open mind and keep it. She did not have anyone in any houses pulling for her as our high school is very lowly represented at UT. She did not attend any of the right camps or go to the most prestigious high school…but she ended up where she should have and she is very, very happy!

I’m not a part of Greek life, but I have many friends who are. Based on what they have told me, I agree with most of what has already been said. Also, if you do not get a bid from a house that you want, you can rush again your sophomore year (assuming you’re currently a freshman). Most, if not all, sororities have sophomore quotas meaning that they have to accept a certain number of girls who rush their sophomore year. So this may give you a better chance if you don’t get a house you want the first time. Good luck!
