Rush Week - Caveat Emptor!

Many of you have been asking questions about different houses in terms of popularity. Some of the questions are about the individual personalities of the houses; success of parties; popularity; good looking women/men, etc.

As an alum, I want to take the opportunity to inform all those interested in rushing, that all of the houses (both fraternities and sororities) are gearing up for a fun/fabulous Rush Week. One of the goals of most of the houses is to generate a lot of interest and create good street buzz about their respective houses. Some of the comments on this board (both negative and postitive) may all part of their internal public relations strategy. I am not saying that all of the posters are disingenuous, just please do not believe everything you are reading.

Some of the students on CC are aligned with certain houses, and want the best possible selection of rushees. Some of the negative rankings about certain houses on this board are justified, some are not. Part of making your own house look "good" on these forums, is to bad-mouth other houses.

My advice to you would be to go back for Rush Week whether or not you plan on joining a house or not. It's a great week, lots of parties - lots of fun! But please formulate your own opinions of where you fit in. Just because one pseudo-cyber-friend, whom you've never met, and know nothing about labels a house as popular doesn't mean that it's the right house for you or even popular for that matter. This is the Internet for goodness sake, these blogs are a very effective marketing tool. In fact, in the marketing industry, this type of man-on-the-street marketing is called Guerilla Marketing. Remember, the leadership of the houses are under very strict rules about when they can rush candidates, so they commonly put subtle plugs for their houses on blogs such as this. Especially be wary of the opinions "new" College Confidential members, who only started posting for Rush.

Anyway, enjoy Rush, go with an open mind and have a great Spring Semester. The Fraternity/Sorority system at Cornell is terrific and if you opt to join, you will have these friends forever. Just make sure it's the right one for you and make your decisions with open minds.

then again i dont think rush week really offers a true perspective as to what the houses are like all the time. they are spending a ton of money and gearing up to impress us and that doesn't really give you the real view of what they are like. a lot of what current students are saying on here is based on our experience at these places during the academic year. yeah, people may have bias towards a particular house, but most of what i read except for a few people who dont have a grasp of the greek system seem to be pretty accuarite. im definitely going to rush week and i know it will be a ton of fun.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything that was said. I think that this thread should be pinned for the time being.

im actually going back to school a week before rush week starts for ski training and im staying at lamda chi house since there are a lot of brothers on the alpine team there. it should be cool to live in a frat house for a week before rush.

Tahoe is so right. It is a mistake to blindly take things said here as the "truth" particularly when dealing with people's opinions and subjective judgments and rumor. This process is a matching process -- identifying which is the right house for you. Only you can decide that.

Hey,
I am considering transfer to cornell, and i am just curious about what the rep/stereotype of the DKE house is there, as i am a member at my current school. Also, anyone know if it is possible for transfers to live in the houses of their respective frats ?

thanks, any input would be of great help

it is not top tier, but i am friends with a couple of the guys and they are really cool, always really friendly, like when i walk in to find my friends if there are guys that i dont know downstairs they are like 'hey whats going on whats your name' etc, their parties are fun, their house is gorgeous, and they have a beer vending machine haha

in what sense is it not top tier?

some of the guys arent that attractive and some are a little nerdy, but they also aren't arrogant *******s like SAE and PsiU
