Many of you have been asking questions about different houses in terms of popularity. Some of the questions are about the individual personalities of the houses; success of parties; popularity; good looking women/men, etc.

As an alum, I want to take the opportunity to inform all those interested in rushing, that all of the houses (both fraternities and sororities) are gearing up for a fun/fabulous Rush Week. One of the goals of most of the houses is to generate a lot of interest and create good street buzz about their respective houses. Some of the comments on this board (both negative and postitive) may all part of their internal public relations strategy. I am not saying that all of the posters are disingenuous, just please do not believe everything you are reading.

Some of the students on CC are aligned with certain houses, and want the best possible selection of rushees. Some of the negative rankings about certain houses on this board are justified, some are not. Part of making your own house look "good" on these forums, is to bad-mouth other houses.

My advice to you would be to go back for Rush Week whether or not you plan on joining a house or not. It's a great week, lots of parties - lots of fun! But please formulate your own opinions of where you fit in. Just because one pseudo-cyber-friend, whom you've never met, and know nothing about labels a house as popular doesn't mean that it's the right house for you or even popular for that matter. This is the Internet for goodness sake, these blogs are a very effective marketing tool. In fact, in the marketing industry, this type of man-on-the-street marketing is called Guerilla Marketing. Remember, the leadership of the houses are under very strict rules about when they can rush candidates, so they commonly put subtle plugs for their houses on blogs such as this. Especially be wary of the opinions "new" College Confidential members, who only started posting for Rush.

Anyway, enjoy Rush, go with an open mind and have a great Spring Semester. The Fraternity/Sorority system at Cornell is terrific and if you opt to join, you will have these friends forever. Just make sure it's the right one for you and make your decisions with open minds.
