Do I have a chance to get Rutgers honors college ???!

Hi! I’m sure you’ll get in, especially if you’re in-state. Just make sure to explain the grade in your application if there’s room for more information. Common App let’s you include more info, so you can explain it there.

You definitely have a good shot, but I wouldn’t take anything for granted. Just focus on keeping your grades up and enjoying the rest of high school.

Ok, before users start responding that you’ll get it because of great stats, let me just step in and explain how Honors College selection works.

I’m also an Indian from NJ and am currently a freshmen in the EMSOP 6 Year pharmacy program at Rutgers. Last year I was also admitted into SAS, Engineering, and SEBS. My stats were similar to yours: I had a 4.24 weighted GPA, 3.87 unweighted, 34 ACT score, 740 SAT Math 2, 730 SAT Chem, took 9 APs, 5 Honors classes, and 2 college courses. The lowest grade I finished with in any HS course was a B in AP Calc.

How many of the four schools gave me honors college admission? None (although I did receive admission into the honors program for all schools except EMSOP, which has an honors program beginning your second year).

The Honors College supposedly takes “the top 5% of students admitted from each school.” That means it takes about 80 students from SAS, with a freshmen enrollment of 4000, and about 13 students from the Pharmacy school, with a total freshmen enrollment of 250. In addition, the Honors college doesn’t just try to take the top students, it tries to have the most “diverse” representation of students. So essentially, affirmative action, which works against Asians because we aren’t “underepresented minorites in academia,” does play a role in who gets in.

TLDR, stats alone don’t guarantee admission into the Rutgers Honors College, it’s essentially a numbers game and, whether fair or not, your race does play a role in HC admissions. Sorry to be so blunt, this was just my two cents based on the experiences I had throughout the admissions process last year.

Good luck with your college apps, hope this helps

Correction with the numbers, the Honors College takes around the top 2% from most schools, which is why I said 80 out of 4000 for SAS. The top 5% of pharmacy students usually get in, as pharmacy students usually have the highest stats among those admitted into Rutgers in general.

Also honors college offers are school specific. What I mean by that is if you are accepted to, say, business, engineering, and A&S, you may only be offered an honors college slot through one of those schools. If you are offered an honors college slot through A&S for example but you really want to go to engineering and you are not offered an honors college slot in engineering you will need to decide what you want more.

@mohchan360

rutgers applicant here. got accepted to rutgers-new brunswick a few weeks ago and i am anxiously waiting for the invites for honors college and merit aid packages. for the top 2% number, do you mind telling me where you got that?

thanks,
maddie

@maddieportnoy18 I emailed the Associate Dean at the school of pharmacy last year regarding merit scholarships, and was given these approximate numbers.

@mohchan360 ok great thank you so much

@mohchan360 …my daughter has been accepted into Rutgers honors college and UF and we are deciding between the two. She wants to pursue pre med track. Trying to get input from students who are enrolled in the honors college to see what they feel about it. thanks

@teddy18 which school costs less? where do you live hence how much it’ll cost for your daughter to get home? Cold NJ winters, snow storms or sunny Florida and hurricanes?

@teddy18 Unfortunately, I can’t help you out here, not an Honors College student myself.

@teddy18 If you don’t mid me asking, what were your daughters stats and what major did she apply to? I am asking as a prospective student wondering about the types of students that are the top 2 % of Rutgers. Thank you
