Rutgers is giving different info. on financial aid

So I called Rutgers, in the information center and when I asked if changing to a on campus to a commuter status, would that change my financial aid award? The first two times the person said no it does not.

However, when I called the information center again, this person says due to the budget decrease (because a commuter has a lesser budget) it will or might decrease my financial aid award. So to check this again I called the financial aid office, and the lady was absolutely no help at all. She had no idea what I was talking about, until I had to explain it to her for 5 minutes.

It's simple does switching from a on campus student to a commuter student lower my financial aid? That was the question. I don't see anything complex in that. However, when the financial aid lady finally understood what I was saying, I also asked her what would Rutgers decrease in my financial aid award. My scholarship, grant, work study, or federal loans?

And when I did she specfically told me the college starts decreases from the federal loans (which is funny because when my EFC changed due to verification they started to eat up my pell grant first). Also she clearly told me (I asked her again if this was true) that my grants, scholarship, and work study WILL NOT BE DECREASED. At the very moment I have no idea what's going to happen to my financial aid award.

However, now being paranoid over the information the Rutgers officers or w.e gives me I'm verifying this to my financial aid counselor over email, on whether what this person the financial aid department was true.

So basically my advice to students, that's going to be dealing with Rutgers financial aid... Do not believe what the people says on the phone, and you should see what other counselors and officers at Rutgers have to say about your financial aid situation. It's my mistake to completely believe the counselors, etc at Rutgers; there is all that human error and such. But it still ****es me off, that I was told no it doesn't lower it twice, and then hear something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. W.e so that is my point just because one person that you call from Rutgers says one thing, always double check with someone else in another department, or another person in general.

Pell Grant is federal aid and as long as Rutgers cost more than the Pell Grant it will not be reduced. If you had a zero EFC the Pell Grant would be 5350 no matter if you were a commuter from parents, living on campus, or living off campus in nonRutgers housing. The Pell Grant would decrease if your EFC went up. What is you EFC?

A commuter (living with parents) receives less aid than a student living off campus because it is assumed when you live with parents, you save money. My d has lived off campus all four years and she has sent financial aid a copy her lease to show she does not live at home.

Pell Grants also make you eligible for an ACG Grant or Smart Grant if you took a tough high school load and a NJ Tag Grant. Were any of these mentioned? University Grant will depend on availability of funds. Best advise, be nice to the financial aid people, they are busy and doing their best. Always email your counselor from the FA website so you get a real FA officier not a student helper.
