Rutgers Mason Gross Summer Acting Question

I am new to CC and am helping my D, a rising junior, research summer conservatory programs. She is applying to Brown Theatrebridge and BUSTI. I haven't seen many reviews of the Rutgers program and I have one specific question re age breakdown: since it is one of the few programs that allows kids as young as 14, are there a lot of younger kids in the program? My daughter is kind and friendly, but is very mature for her age and drawn to older kids. Last year at A.C.T. she noted that many of the younger kids were not as comfortable and did not commit as fully as the more experienced, older actors in the group. I'd love to hear from someone who attended the program (or whose child did), how they liked it, if they have any other summer programs with which to compare it, and the age breakdown of participants. Thanks!

If no one on CC has attended this program, you should call the program’s office/director/other contact and ask them about the age distribution. Also inquire about any references or program alumni you can contact to ask about their experiences.

Hi there! Sorry this is so late, and I hope you have found more information int he mean time. I’m an alumni of RSAC 2011 and I’m so glad that your daughter is interested in the program. RSAC is absolutely amazing, the training is second to none. The program immerses it’s students into what a conservatory BFA acting program would be like. The days go from 8 am to 10 pm. I was a part of the Acting Track, so the classes I had included movement, acting, voice, speech, singing, theatre appreciation, classic cinema, and many more. We also have lots of guest speakers visit and also go on a lot of culture trips. The training is intensive, and I was lucky enough to be put into the acting class with one of the faculty from Mason Gross, Kevin Kittle.

Most of the students were going into their senior year or junior year, we had one or two going into their sophomore year. Everyone was really accepting no matter how old you are, which the friendships and strong connections you make with people in such a short amount of time is also what makes RSAC so amazing. However, unless you want to come back for Advanced Track, which many usually do, I would suggest going a bit later. It depends, if your daughter is thinking about going to college for this, putting it up toward the end of her high school career may be the best option, however if she really wants an intensive program now, please look into it. It’s one, if not the best summer training program for high school students.

I’d be more than happy to tell you about the program if you are interested still. Here’s the promotional video that was made this past summer, it kind of highlights the MT program (because they were able to get a lot more footage within those classes) however, the response from everyone is absolutely spot on, and I’d be more than happy to answer any questions that the video does not answer :)

Thanks for the review! She has her apps in at Brown and BU. At this point we’ll probably wait for those responses & then think about Rutgers. Yes, there is always next year, too.

Are you returning for Advanced Track, or was 2011 the year before your senior year?

Yeah that was the year before my senior year, so I won’t be returning this summer. However, I know those who did do Advanced Track this pasts summer loved it. If you have the funds and time to go two years in a row, after the first summer you’ll want to.

sparkleshirley,
Do you know when Theatrebridge will send out notifications on acceptance/rejection?

According to the web page any time after April 1. We´re waiting too.

Yes, we are still crossing our fingers too! Best of luck, all.

SO, does anybody have any scoop on when and how we are going to hear about acceptance/rejection/or waitlist to Theatrebridge? Good luck all! I am going crazy waiting!

I broke down and called extended programs today. The woman said there is not a set date; the artistic director is looking at composition of the group and it’s sort of a “rolling” thing. Good luck, and let’s keep each other posted!

Thanks for the info!

My D got an email that they are still processing the applications. Good luck!

My daughter just got her Brown acceptance this morning! She is away at State Acting Comp and hasn’t heard yet, but they CC’d me on the (rejected) scholarship application. I will do a quick comparison of faculty and other program details between BUSTI and Theatrebridge, but Theatrebridge is her first choice, so I think the decision is already made.

Best of luck to all with summer plans!

Congrats! My D hasn´t heard yet but no news is better than bad news. Thank you for letting us know so now we can be on the look out.

Does anybody know how difficult it is to get into this program? (Rutgers summer acting conservatory) Thanks!
