It comes down to choosing between Rutgers and American for me. American would end up costing about twice the price of Rutgers, but is still affordable. I intend to major in something in the humanities, NOT political science or international relations. Thanks all.

I'd go with Rutgers

Expect alot of poly sci and international major if you choose American University. Rutgers is much more diverse then American U in terms of students body and in majors

10 years ago this fall my DS started at AU and switched to RU 2 years later for family reasons - he did love AU. It is smaller, with much smaller classes. Nice kids, many rich kids in those days, very international for it's size of course. Kids he knew took taxi off-campus to hang out (metro right there - just taxi types I guess). Nice friends, somewhat still in touch, and many are professionals now. They do say it changed a lot after he left.
RU is funky, totally diverse in any way you can think of. It has big classes at lower levels in some depts. The work was more in depth and no one to watch and make sure you keep up - didn't have that at AU either but at least was easier in the classes he took. Can't speak for any other classes or current situation. There are a million things to do on campus and close to RU.
for him the major differences were the work was much harder, lots more students to hang out with - you can have a different group of friends every semester or belong to lots of groups of friends.

If you're not looking at polisci, Rutgers will almost certainly have a stronger faculty in any department over American. (Even with polisci, our department may be equally as strong).

AMERICAN!!!!..... dumbass
