For communications or public relations which school is better?

I would say Rutgers, because its a very good school all around, and I know from a few friends who go there that their communications program is excellent.

Are you in state for N Jersey?

FYI: American is renovating a building (McKinley) to serve as a new home for their communications program. They also are building a large set of new residence halls on the south end of the campus (where the parking lots are now located).

American is significantly better then Rutgers, and that is not accounting for great internships with government agencies…American is also much more selective and is more costly then RU…

I am from Maryland

According to USNWR, American’s acceptance rate last year was 53% to RU’s 61%, so not a huge difference in selectivity. Also, RU has a lot of high-achieving middle-class NJ kids who cannot afford expensive privates, so you will have some academic competition there. However, they are completely different kinds of schools. We visited AU this fall with our DD and were impressed by what we saw (with no prior knowledge of the school). The campus is lovely, the students seemed engaged and interested, and the vibe was good. Apparently AU requires Communication majors to double major in another academic subject, which I think is a good idea. I am by no means a Rutgers basher and I believe it deserves more respect. But as a Maryland resident, why would you want to pay OOS tuition at Rutgers if you could go to the comparable or slightly better UMCP?

AU has a stronger communications program. It is an accredited program - and all such programs require that their students double major in another field. My D did a high school program there in communications and found the faculty excellent. They are extremely different schools. I went to Rutgers for graduate school a hundred years ago and they have very little in common with AU. So it depends on what you are looking for- good things in both places but different.
