Would love to hear honest opinions about the Newark Campus. My son has been accepted, and is still waiting for a decision from New Brunswick. I really can't afford to send him out of state, so Rutgers is our first choice. I have heard good and bad about Newark, so any of your thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks!!!

I can’t speak to the school itself but I have noticed that the area immediately around it is not as scary a it was decades ago when I first moved to the area. But: It is still Newark; it isn’t great. I don’t know what the student experience would be like there since I assume it is much more of a commuter school than the NB campus is.

Rutgers is a relatively expensive state university in any case unless your son qualifies for one of the SAT/class-rank scholarships. Have you and he considered need-based aid or merit aid at private colleges out of New Jersey? It’s not too late. If the Rutgers apps are in, that is great, but there is still time explore more options.

I have a couple of friends that go to Rutgers-Newark. Rutgers Newark has been trying to attract students from choosing it over NB by offering a little more scholarship money than NB (scholarships from Rutgers stack, so Newark added more money on top of the one NB gave them). I’ve also been told the area around the uni is pretty good but it’s still Newark.
