Rutgers vs Georgia Tech vs NYU for Computer Science

Hi CC, May 1st is coming soon and I still can’t decide!

Estimated Total Annual Cost for each school:

Rutgers: 15k
Georgia Tech: 45k
NYU: 48k

Rutgers:
Close to home and my cheapest option by a longshot. The clear advantage is being able to save up money for grad school and other things. However, I’m worried about the quality of the education (heard mixed reviews from rutgers being a public ivy to an overrated school that accepts a bunch of dumb kids in NJ) and job prospects. Maybe someone here can clear my doubts!

NYU:
Most expensive option and I would have to live on commute. NYU is not the most attractive option so it’s basically down to rutgers and georgia tech. I’m only considering NYU at this point since it offers the city life and very good job prospects.

Georgia Tech:
Cost is in the middle, and has the best computer science program out of these three schools. Not too sure about job prospects, especially since I want to move back to NY after college.

I guess my main question is should I save (Rutgers) or go for the prestige and better quality education (Georgia Tech)? I’m leaning towards Rutgers mainly because I don’t want to put a financial burden on my parents. However if anyone can make a case for Georgia Tech and NYU I’m all ears.

Unless the extra $30K a year is affordable, I’d choose Rutgers. The quality of a Georgia Tech CS education isn’t going to be worth the premium.

What you learn will be a result of how much time you spend hacking away at your homework assignments, not which school you go to.

Unless your family considers $120,000 to be pocket change, Rutgers is the obvious choice here.

So is rutgers as reputable as Georgia tech in terms of job prospects, assuming that cs involves a lot of self-teaching? @simba9

Bump
Can anyone else comment on Rutgers’ computer science program?

There will be regional differences in recruiting, but Rutgers is a respectable school for CS.

@ucbalumnus so if I plan on living in NY after college, Rutgers would be better choice than Georgia tech in that respect?

Location would be more favorable to Rutgers for New York employers. Georgia Tech may have some added reputation value which may attract some employers willing to travel.

Rutgers! The difference between GT and NYU’s price is negligible. The difference between Rutgers and the other two is huge. Rutgers’ location is also more favorable for NY after graduating.

Thank you everyone for your input. I ended up choosing Rutgers, Go Knights!

Wait, you made your decision before I had a chance to answer your question???

I think you made a good decision.

@simba9 lol sorry about that my parents were getting really impatient :stuck_out_tongue:
