Rutgers vs NYU

I've been accepted at both of these schools. I wanted to do an Mathematics-Economics major at NYU, but I don't think they offer it at Rutgers. I'd probably just do Mathematics or Physics in that case. NYU will end up costing roughly $27k/year, while Rutgers would be $23k/year (Out of State). Mother wants me to go to Rutgers, because that's the max she can afford and I'd have to take out the rest in loans. I'd like to go to NYU because it's far more prestigious and has a better location. She is almost refusing to let me take out loans, but I'm 18 and $16k in loans at the end of college isn't really that bad, is it?

Second question is, how do the academics stack up? Would going to NYU give me a large advantage for getting into a top Grad school (would like to persue an MBA)?

go to NYU since they offer the major you linke. also 4000 dollars more a year is not too much considering what you will get in return,so go to NYU, live a little!

a $4,000 difference is worth the difference between Rutgers and NYU

I don't know if this influences your decision, but you know that you can just double major in Math and Econ at Rutgers.. that may be different than what's offered at NYU though.. NYU might have just a very math-based econ curriculum.

E-mail econ dept at both schools, see if they can offer any advice.

$16,000 is not an outrageous amount of debt to graduate college with.

If you're not in Stern, I don't think that the difference in prestige of Rutgers vs NYU is all that large, when grad schools are concerned (not high school students :)).

Exactly what I wanted to say.

Does the original poster live in the city? Does he plan on commuting to NYU? If the answers are "no", then he might find that NYU is way more than the $23k a year - more like $40-50k. It's not worth it if you are not in Stern.

NYU has the Courant Institue of Mathematics which is highly regarded.

Unless you are getting scholarship, NYU will cost you $50,000/yr. No joke! Ous S is a freshman at Stern. He loves it but it is expensive.

I got a scholarship to NYU.

EDIT: Thanks for the responses guys!
