Sad

The more I look into UChicago, the more I fall in love with it. I would love to go there.

However, there is no way possible that I would be accepted. 28 ACT with a 3.0 GPA.

So, I come to you asking, in your opinion, what schools are similar to UChicago?

There is another thread like this, but Reed seems like a similar style, though is also quite competitive.

I wouldn't say you have a great shot, but they honestly don't put test scores above all else. Do apply.

haha i have a 28 too, it's not bad. lowest middle 50 percent i think. but i do have a 3.7, so it might help

I've heard Carleton might be good, but I honestly don't know. But I agree, apply and make sure you do an excellent job on your essays and Why Chicago? answer. There's always hope.

Tyler
your GPA is the factor that looks a little sticky to me, although there is nothing wrong with having a reach in your mix.

What part of the country would you like to attend school in? Majors? Need merit or financial aid? If you can give us a little more if, we can make some suggestions.

Is that unweighted? What types of classes have you been taking?
There's a lot to factor into a 3.0..
I had a 28 too.

Tyler: I agree that the 3.0 could be sticky for a middle-class white male with average essays and no particular distinguishing characteristics. On the other hand it could perfectly fine if you have other factors in your application: 1st generation applicant, economically disadvantaged, etc. I have always said that kids like that deserve all the advantage they can get, and I would not feel terrible if my D lost her chance at Chicago to such a kid. What drives me nuts is crap like this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/429451-chance-african-american-girl.html

All the privilege and advantages in the world, yet would receive special consideration based solely on extraneous factors.

To sum it up, apply anyway. If you really, really love Chicago it will show in the application. The worst that can happen is a rejection letter and a wasted $60 fee. As long as you don't start thinking that you will be unhappy anywhere else, you will be fine.

That's really bringing me down as well. Looking around these forums is just killing my confidence. I've placed all my bets on my essays. My GPA is terrible, and hopefully the essays will pull me through! Essays!

Tyler, are you doing Regular? If you are, then we will help you proofread your essays. Essays that are excellently written demonstrate your intellect more than your one ACT score. And this probably goes for all schools as well. I wouldn't start looking for other schools yet; put forth the effort to make your essay uniquely you. Heck, put a poem that you made inside your essay if you have to! Or compose a piece of music just for that school.

If you aren't in, then send your supplements to a different school. It is a game which I am sorry to say.
