Has anyone here been a member of an SAE team? Was it fun? How much time did it take up?

I haven't been a member of an SAE team but as a faculty member at a small school with a mini-baja team I can tell you that they are typically a lot of work. Even at bigger schools where the teams are larger, it typically comes down to a small group that acutally gets things done. But those who really get involved love the experience and have always told me that they would do it again. When you go to national competitions you will see several corporations show up as well trying to recruit engineers. They know that mini-baja leaders tend to make great engineers.

The team at my son's college is "completely student run". Does this mean that at other colleges the teams have faculty assistance/input? Also, how do employers manage to recruit engineers at such large and busy events?

No, they are pretty much student run. At our school one of the faculty members has helped out a little more since the team is only two years old. The events have a lot of sponsors and usually have sponsor luncheons and other things of that nature. Yes, it is a busy time but a lot of networking does happen!

Thanks for the info, dr_reynolds! We all appreciate your expert input. :)
