I don’t know where this belongs but I took a College Course at Baruch College after my Junior Year. Will this help?

I will have a good essay and a very good rec from my math team advisor. Is 1 rec enough?

I will be majoring in Mathematics/Statistics.

I will be applying only to these schools:

Boston University (ED)

SUNY - StonyBrook (RD)

What do you think of my chances for each? And what will happen if somehow they both reject me?

If they both reject you, then you'll regret this decision for the rest of your life.

Seriously, don't only apply to TWO schools! What's you reason for not applying to others? If its a question of $$$, you can waive the fee.

Quickly looking over you stats, I would say both schools deserve to be on your list, but they're not the only ones.

Don't worry, BU will probably take you ED

These are the only 2 that I truely like. I spent almost 2 years using online sources such as TPR website, and college books in Barnes and Nobles. But they are no good.

A friend of mine only applied to Elon- that's it, ONE school. She figured if she didn't get in, she didn't want to go to college. Bryn Mawr tried to recruit her, but she's going to Elon. :)

If those are the only colleges you like, don't sweat it. However, IF worst comes to worst and you don't get in at either, you can just take a gap year and apply next year.

Just one question-have you considered Rochester?

I think you are good for BU, just based on a friend of mine who got in without many ECs and lower stats then you. Though I really don't know.

You're in. Trust me, ED BU. Personally, I think you're shooting a little too low.

yeah what do you like so much about BU? you can find other large city schools... or schools that are liberal like it, because you're a shoe-in especially if they're your first choice.

Greenmoon33, I'm not really sure. Maybe its just Boston. Do you know anything about the mathematics/statistics department? Is it strong?

I think it sounds like you need to expand your research a bit more.

I have researched for years.... All I have is BU and SBU. Do you have any suggestions that I can look into?

But you don't even know how strong BU's math department is? I don't know much about BU or SBU, but if you like the city, maybe you should go for Columbia as a real reach

lil_killer129 what types of communnity service projects did you do with the YMCA leaders club?

why are you posting fake stats? you posted on july 8th that your SAT score was 1660, and now it is somehow 2000? You also posted that your AP Physics grade was a 3

just curious, how do you get a 690W and a 550CR?

Eh, writing and CR are different. I've noticed that a lot of people do really poor on verbal but well on writing and the math section. The verbal section is more "big picture" ideas whereas the math and writing sections are a very analytical kind of reading.

The entire SAT is a reading test.

But...you know what...let's not get into that :P.

i always thought if one could read, they could write, and vice versa. if people are scoring with a 140 point differential (math and verbal are very different, thats another animal alltogether) between critical reading and writing, there might be something wrong... i could be very wrong though, but that score jump is pretty big

I had like a 60 point diff. between writing and cr. BTW, he's trolling i think.

yeah i have a 60 point diff also, and it sure seems like it. pretty lame troll id say.

There's a thread that was a featured thread a couple of months ago. It was about a student who applied to 7 schools two years ago (all kind of reaches) and got rejected at all of them. He took a "gap" year (a year off), then reapplied to 9 schools and got rejected at 2 and accepted at 7 (the 2 where he was rejected were the only two schools where he had also applied the previous year).

The moral of the story is that you should always--always--have a safety school. That is, have a school where you are sure to be accepted and where you would be happy to go to school if necessary. And I've read your posts about doing years of research and not being able to find another school--and my comment to you is "PLEEEEEEASE"--stop being ridiculous. There are over 1700 colleges in the US--and there are a whole lot of these where the education you will receive is excellent.

It will be sad to see your post next year where you complain about how you were rejected and are now going to a community college or working at the local Mickey D's saving money for college by flipping hamburgers. There's nothing wrong with either of those choices--but they should be choices, not something you were forced to do since you were too overly-selective to apply to more colleges. So the answer is "No, it's not safe to apply to just 2 schools".
