from your past experience, which colleges are the safest? and which arent? I just watched primetime where they really singled out U of Tennessee and UNC Wilmington...

Colleges are as safe as you make them. Just don't go outside by yourself at 3AM and you will be fine.

 As long as you have common sense, you'll be fine. I mean, there are just some places you can do things at, where you can't in say NYC. As long as aren't doing anything risky, you're pretty safe

haha that report was such crap. UMass isnt nearly as bad as they made it out to be.

I live about 10 mins from UNC Wilmington, and a young girl was murdered there just a few years ago. So you can probably scratch that.

Actually, joev, I feel safest in the bathroom at 3AM (preferably 4:30 AM, which is why I'm up now). Nobody's ever there then. On weekends I try not to even hit the bathroom between 10PM and 4AM, will go in emergency situations on weekdays. Yes, I've been taking my showers in the wee hours of the morning these days.

I don't feel safe on Mount Union's campus. Drunks roam everywhere, cars and bikes are vandalized as is personal property on dorm doors, and the RAs do nothing. At least our security department is decent--but they never found the idiot who almost bust my door down at 2AM.

When I go home, the biggest issue will be tripping over my dog in the morning when I get out of bed. I'd rather hobble around on a gimpy foot than get beat up/shot/have my car ruined.

According to slate.com http://www.slate.com/id/2126321/ , the University of Connecticut is the safest place to be in the nation to be protected from natural disaster. Basically its in the middle of nowhere, very little crime and you can walk around at any hour of the day or night by yourself and no one will bug you. I've walked by myself at all hours of night, always felt safe. Police presence is also quite noticeable. Nothing happens here at UCONN, except for sports, and our famous parties.

Yeah, UConn is extremely extremely safe. When I was there, at no point did I ever feel threatened. Storrs (where UConn is) IS Uconn. There aren't bored soals (sp?) walking around campus trying to bother college students...it's just not possible. UConn is in the middle of nowhere, seriously. If you lived at UConn from the day you were born until you died, and never left, you would NEVER see or experience a mugging, murder, kidnapping, or robbery. UConn's an awesome place to go if you're worried about safety that much. Yale's not, New Haven is depressing.

Yale's really not so bad, if you stay within the Yale bubble...

I know this is a two year bump. But in light of recent events in my state, (please pray!) I would like to know more about this topic.

sf, i'm assuming you're from VA. a good friend of mine is at VTech and I'm waiting to hear back from him......but people, don't judge any entire school by a few incidents of violence. face the facts--rapes, murders, etc, as much as they are terrible things, occur on nearly every campus in america. it's up to you as an individual to watch out for yourself. i heard someone say a little bit ago when i was in the elevator about how VT must be full of criminals and thugs and whatnot because someone decided to shoot people. when in fact there are amazing people at that school. a girl was raped in the room right across from friend's room back in October here at my school, and i've never felt unsafe on campus or in the town at all.

No school is completely safe. Obviously the incidents at VT proved that today. Rapes, murders, assaults, they happen everywhere even if you don't hear about them. There was a girl raped at my school (Auburn) a few months ago, and another girl was almost raped but she fought the guy off (same guy). The guy was a roamer who had warrants out on him in like 8 other counties and he happened to come to Auburn to do his dirtywork. It's not indicative of Auburn's campus or the city.

What I want to know is how someone got into a dorm at VT. I know at my school the dorms are locked by card-access only 24/7 and the only way to get in is with another student that lives there letting you in. Sure, some people sneak significant others in the side door, but no one's going to let in some random sketchy dude they don't know like that. So the question is thus: was the guy a student there? did he know someone who was? did he find someone's lost access card or did he steal one from someone?

My neighboor who I have known since I was 8 was in the same building...

Are there colleges with card swipes and such into buildings?

EDIT: I have lived in the dorm of VT for a Science camp. There is NO card swipe. There are only BOLTS. Just one lock into the dorm...and locks into each room. There is a public shower. I know there is an alarm system, but if multiple gunman rush into the dorm...the students stand no chance. Gosh...I can't believe it...

UT-Martin. Cause nothing says safety like a town excited to get it's first Wal-Mart.

FYI: Univ of Tenn- Martin

I go to Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO. the crime rate is extremly low, since there are only about 800 kids on campus, and the town is so small. the most we have are some stray dogs and some nerotic squirrls. you know almost everyone on campus, chances are you've hung out with them, so its easy to point out someone who hurt you in some way, either theft or violence. not to say it dosnt happen, but its much less frequent, as long as you know what your doing and who your with. like, dont hang out at sertine frats at certian times, you might get somthing slipped into your drink. but we dont worry about walking around campus at three a.m. by ourselves. and you can hear someone scream on one end of campus from the other, so that helps us feel better.

i was outside taking a jog (alone) at 1:30 am on Dartmouth's campus-nobody bothered me... (i will admit, though, Hanover is kind of in the middle of nowhere :p).

That statement is far from true, but UConn definitely is extremely safe nonetheless.

so far ive felt that BC is pretty safe.. ive seen like two notices from the cops so far but nothing too serious. newton campus (where the law school and alot of freshman live) is in newton, ma which was voted one of the top 5 safest cities in the country a ocuple of years ago.

i used to go running at night here with 2 friends and felt fine. its all college kids and families living in the suburbs. as long as you dont venture into the wrong part of boston youre really fine.

Hi, I just wanted to update this thread. Check out these recent links. The first lists the schools with the Worst Crime Rankings, and the 2nd is self-explanatory.
