Safety at Tulane?

Right now, I'm basically deciding between Tulane and another school, and I really like Tulane but am worried about safety. I know that they say it's a pretty safe campus, but I've heard stories of people getting robbed at gun point extremely close to the campus. So basically, how safe is the school?

It is very safe, virtually the same or better than other urban (and some rural) campuses. There was a series of about 3-4 of the robberies you mention, and thankfully no one was hurt. It was definitely the same perpetrators each time. That is certainly not the norm and the police were all over it. As I understood it, these took place about 6-10 blocks from campus. But this is not unique to Tulane, it happens at any urban university, and while you probably don’t remember it, there was a female student killed in Chapel Hill a few years back, and that is normally a pretty idyllic place.

Bottom line, safety at Tulane is one of the last factors that should keep you from attending. It really does have a great record and they continually work to improve things. I think they just added a bunch of new security cameras too.

There are threads on this from last year that point you towards the sites that report the statistics. Search and I am sure you will find them.

Tulane is an urban school. However, unlike many urban schools, it is in a very upscale neighborhood. The crime rate on campus is no more than any other school and less than others S2 was considering. Don’t be fooled, rural campuses have crime as well. Tulane has a solid police force and call boxes strategically located around and near campus. There are transportation services, whereby students can get university provided rides. One service that impressed me was that students who take a taxi to a location off campus and find themselves stranded, can call the school and a car will be sent for them. First I’ve heard of that at a college (though I’m sure there are others).

Each school is required to provide crime statistics on its website. A little investigating should allow for a comparison. Here is Tulane’s: [Tulane University - Crime Information](http://tulane.edu/publicsafety/crime-information.cfm)

What is often overlooked, is that most crime on campus is committed by fellow students. This ranges from petty theft to sexual assault. Much goes unreported. It is wise to have an insurance policy for the former and to be vigilant for the latter.

Tulane is in a quite upscale neighborhood. I wouldn’t consider safety as a concern if interested (other than the general precautions anyone should take anywhere).

Do you mind sharing what the other school is you are considering, and were it is located? My s will be living off campus at Tulane next year. Agree with the above-- it is in a city and any student shoudl take reasonable care on any campus, but safety has not been an issue for DS at Tulane.
