Hi, I’m a current senior and applying for colleges. My sat score is 1860 and GPA 3.67, because I came from another country, so they kinda messed up my GPA. I chose Hofstra University in New York as my safety school. But my counselor suggested me to maybe look for another safety school that I will definitely get in. I live in VA, and I want to major in business management/ administrations, but if possible I want to go NY or MA, CA. Can anyone give some suggestion plz? And this is very urgent.
Suffolk University in Boston.
University of Scranton. It is ranked highly, has an unusually high grade campus and you will get in. It is ranked in the top 25 nationally in finance and accounting. The business school is very good.
Fairfield and Marist are others.
A safety ALSO has to be affordable. How much will your family pay each year??
edit…from another post, it looks like you need a lot of aid.
How much are your parents spending on each of your siblings college costs? How is their college cost getting paid for? do they “go away” to college? did they have higher college stats than you do?
The fact that you may end up with a lowish EFC with siblings in college, does NOT mean that schools will give you enough money to be affordable.
Are you applying to any schools where you can commute from home?
Yes, and it should be a school you really would not mind attending. It’s (at least) four years of your life; you do not want to be miserable for four years.
How do you decide if you’ll like a school?
- Your gut feeling
- School vibe
- Size/look of campus (physical environment)
- Rural/urban/suburban
- Weather
- Classes/Programs (research them -- you don't want to get there and realize they don't have a major you like, or classes you find cool)
- Available clubs/activities
- Distance from friends/family
My oldest sister has a job. My two older brothers go to community colleges and have part-time jobs. If I really get into my reach school, my parents would probably pay for it and I will take students loan. But for a safety school, I don’t want to go too far, maybe maximum is $30,000. George Mason, Vtech, UVA are on my list.
@prezbucky
These are definitely important criteria, but I’m kinda lost. I don’t have the chance to visit the campus, and I’m been thinking on this list for a week, still couldn’t find an absolute safety school…
OK:
UVA is no safety, as you know. You are in-state, but it is still likely a low reach for you.
VA Tech is probably a match for you. Be cautiously optimistic.
And George Mason is probably also a match, maybe a low match. More optimism.
No safety among those three, though I would think you’ll get into at least one of them. But it’s not a given.
So you are looking for admissions and financial safeties in Virginia?
Maybe look at Sweet Briar College, Roanoke College, and VCU. I’ll check their stats, just a sec.
OK - All three appear to be admissions safeties.
Sweet Briar is 98% female – just FYI.
Sweet Briar and Roanoke offer low student-faculty ratios. Average indebtedness at graduation is around $35k at both schools.
VCU is 100% a safety: they are going test-optional and if your GPA is 3.3 or better, you’re in. (double-check that). Price is around $22,500 per year.
I think those are three decent options for a safety. Or two, if Sweet Briar isn’t your cup of tea. Obviously, make sure they are affordable for you.

my parents would probably pay for it

Please ask your parents how much they’ll pay. Many students assume that their parents will pay a lot more than they actually will.
-Manhattan College (Management)
-Marist College (Match)
-Nazareth College (Management)
-Roberts Wesleyan University
-St. John’s University (Match)
I’d check out Canisius, Le Moyne, & Susquehanna as well, they may offer you merit aid.
And you as a student are limited to $5.5K in loans as a freshman, topping out at $7.5K as a Junior and Senior. Anything else will be on your parents.
Thank you guys, your advice are all very helpful, and I made my decision.
Which is…?
I was going to say VCU or CNU for instate safeties, and Marist, Susquehanna, and Baruch for OOS.
