Safety Concerns

I'm going to be a junior next year living in Courtyards and I'm pretty concerned about safety.

Living in Cambridge/Denton Community for the past two years, I was never really concerned about it, but now that I'll be farther from campus and probably traveling late at night (lots of friends in Commons/South Campus dorms, studying at McKeldin late, evening clubs and activities), I'm worried. I plan on biking a lot to and from places since I don't like always having to rely on buses, and I'm just a little nervous and muggings and traveling around late, especially after midnight or so (not to mention that I'll be carrying my computer with me nearly 100% of the time).

Am I overly concerned? Maybe I'm just being a paranoid girl, but getting all these UMD alerts in the past couple weeks really has me spooked.

Bump?

Take advantage of the night bus service. For a little inconvenience of waiting for the bus, you should feel much safer. Both D’s usually called someone and talked on their cell phone walking across campus at night, from visiting friends at Commons to the Language House, or when walking from parking their car on week nights. Most of my conversations with them occur when they are walking from one place to another. It works for me, and when I hear the echo that means they’ve entered the stairwell of their building, I know that they’ll be ready to hang up soon!!!

You greatly reduce your chances of being a victim of crime if you:

-Are not drunk
-Are aware of your surroundings
-Are with friends
-Don’t deal drugs

If you wanna be safer, then I do recommend using the buses. IMO they run often enough that they’re not an inconvenience. I’ve also noticed that a lot of the crimes seem to happen in downtown CP, near the bars and whatnot. You’d probably be fine biking back to Courtyards since you’d be on a big highway.
