From what I understand, Pittsburgh is a pretty safe city. However, I've lived in the suburbs of New Jersey for my whole life, and I feel fine walking around and running through my neighborhood by myself. But Pittsburgh is a whole different story. I'm 4'11", so I'm pretty tiny, and I'm worried about walking around by myself in the city. Should I be worried? Should I carry something with me? I'm a runner, so I'd like to be about to run through Schenley Park by myself, but not if it's unsafe.

I would not have a problem walking anywhere in the Oakland area during daylight hours. After dark, there are usually others walking around as well - so I would also feel safe. As for Schenley Park, it is very safe however I myself would still prefer to run during peak hours when other runners are around.

I run in Schenley Park, but I wouldn’t run there in the dark, since the really woods-y parts aren’t lit.

Coming from the suburbs, I was really worried about this. But you know what the best thing about living in the city is? There are always tons of people around, even at night. This is especially true on campus. The only time things start to get creepy is really late at night. I do know of one or two cases of people getting robbed going out alone around 2-4 am. But I don’t think its hard to avoid going out alone at those times, or if you do, keeping to the well-lit streets.

As far as running in Schenley, its great during the day, but its very dark and practically deserted at night. I wouldn’t run there at night just for the fact that it would be very easy to trip and hurt yourself, with no one around. But Pitt has plenty of treadmills in the various workout rooms if you don’t manage to get your run in before dark.
