I was informed that UC was located in a not so good area.
1) is that true or is the school fine just some areas a questionable?
2)Hoe much mix is there between students and the general public?
3) My son and family is planning a trip to see the school during a weekend (to see the marching band which he is interested in) any advice on what we might expect as well as how good a representation the university will give over a such a weekend.
Thanks

1) the area is definitely “questionable”. However, the students learn to accept it and everything works out for the most part. Every week or so we get an alert about some type of crime done to a UC student, usually a mugging. However, if you don’t walk alone and carry valuables late at night, you will definitely be fine. The really bad part of town is a little bit away (an area called “over the rhine”). I always feel very safe on campus, no matter what time it is, however past midnight I try not to walk far off campus alone.

Well, on the campus? not much except for football games (UC makes a lot of money from those by selling tickets to the public) and some events (like political rallies and concerts). Off campus, we have the co-op program, so students are definitely going out to the “general public”, and theres also a lot more to do off campus than on campus, like amusement parks, museums, etc.

Well, definitely sign up for a tour of the campus, as well as a tour whatever college he’s interested in (though tours may only be on weekdays… not too sure). The campus kinda dies down on the weekend (UC is still a commuter school for a large portion of students), so unless you’re going to a football game you might not see as many students as you’d expect (though saturday nights, just off campus can get pretty lively).

good luck!

Thanks for the input. We will defiantly see the campus.

UC is not a safe campus - which saddens me since I live 10 minutes from it. We are not considering it for our daughter due to this.

Off campus to the south and east have some seedy areas, but campus is as safe as your average urban campus. The campus is well contained on a large city block. I just walked through campus at 9pm the other night and saw no shady characters. My son is a sophomore and lives a block off campus to the west. He has several friends in the band that have enjoyed the program alot.

We just visited UC over the past couple days. First, I have to say that I am not familiar with Cincinnati overall - we are OOS prospects. Perhaps there are parts of the city that are nice, having been redeveloped. But if so, they are nowhere near UC. We drove the surrounding neighborhoods and they are all very sketchy. No way I’d let me daughter walk more than 100 yards off-campus past 5pm. On-campus security seems high - a lot of time was spent on the tour going over the very comprehensive system of blue lights, walking/van escorts, etc. This is common amongst other urban campuses we’ve visited in sketchy areas and may be very effective. My only word of advice to prospectives is to SEE THE CAMPUS FOR YOURSELF. Do not accept at face value anyone’s assurance that this school is secure.

UC is my top choice right now for graduate school but the campus does not feel safe at all. Seeing ads for Police Women of Cincinnati didn’t help…

My D is a sophomore at UC (CCM). She lives in an off campus apartment and has not had safety issues. I don’t get the impression that the kids walk around being scared all the time, but they do use common sense. D is oos, and at this point, our state flagship (U of Minnesota) is having more safety issues than UC. My D went to an inner city high school so it’s possible she is less bothered by the “sketchy” areas than someone from an outer ring suburb.

coloratura_as–pm me if you have any UC or CCM questions.

I’m a freshman in DAAP so walking home late at night after a long day in the studio is not new to me. Granted i live on campus, i never feel unsafe walking home alone from DAAP with my laptop etc.

On weekends i have ventured off campus a lot though. Students learn the surrounding areas quickly and know where you can and can’t get away with walking alone at night. I’ve walked along Jefferson at night but wouldn’t go past it alone. The Calhoun/Clifton side of campus is perfectly safe at night if you’re only going a couple of blocks out, and the walk to Ludlow and the areas around it are fine. The safe places are really where all the action is so less safe areas are never a concern.

Oh and I’m from a suburb of Chicago so the urban/suburban background doesn’t seem to make a difference.
