Hi, I'm CA high school senior girl, and my top choices right now seem to be SFSU in CA, DU, and CU Boulder. I think DU would be my best bet because it's the best for my major (computer science) of the three, they're offering me a really decent financial aid package, and it's on the quarter system, which many people have told me is better then semesters.

However, I've also heard that Denver is a really dangerous city, and that campus security on DU itself is not the best. As a young woman, I--and my parents--are somewhat concerned by that. Does anyone have anything to report on that? Is it pretty easy to stay safe, or is it dangerous? Do they allow students to carry pepper spray on campus? I know that some schools don't. I wouldn't know anybody in Colorado when I go, so I want to make sure I'll be able to keep myself safe.

Also, if anybody happens to know, how does public safety in Denver compare to that in San Francisco, where one of my oher choices is located? I know that SF is considered a pretty dangerous city. Boulder would be a lot more expensive for me and my family than the other two options, so I just want to know if I would be better off going to Denver!

My son is a freshman at DU majoring in computer science. We’re from New Jersey. As a parent I feel the DU campus is safe. The area around the campus is residential, except for commercial places like restaurants, bars, on S. University and Evans. Obviously you don’t want to be walking alone off campus at 1 am, but that’s probably true anywhere. Campus security does patrol the campus and surrounding area, including where some fraternities and sororities are off-campus (couple of blocks) and the off-campus apartment areas. If you go to the college web site you can like to The Clarion student newspaper, which publishes a weekly (I think weekly) crime report. If we had to do it all over again we definitely would send our son to Denver.

Have you been to DU? The school is in a terrific area - very nice. It direct surroundings are an old city neighborhood with small homes that are all now well cared for. Right down the street - across the highway is one of the nicest large parks I’ve ever seen and the homes are fabulous - wealthy neighborhood. We visited early this month and it was by far the safest feeling campus of the schools we’ve visited (Syracuse, American, Boston U, Norhteastern, UC Boulder. Okay, UConn was safer but that’s in farmland. As cool as Boulder was, there was more concern there than at DU.

Our son is considering DU. We don’t live in Denver but are very familiar with that part of the city and I feel comfortable with the part of town DU is in and with the campus security. As with all cities, be aware of your surroundings, if you’re out late, be careful and have a friend with you. S14 has a couple of good friends there and there have been no mentions of security issues.
