Safety in Dorms

Is it ok to leave expensive items in a freshman dorm (i.e. big tv, ps3, xbox). I'm sure theft doesn't happen often but do many kids take the risk?

My son never mentioned any problem with theft at Wake. That is something he has liked very much about the campus. He said he has seen people leave their laptops, ipods, etc on a library table and come back an hour later and no one will have touched them. He had tv, etc in dorm and never had a problem.

There's a lot of kids that'll bring large electronics like that - you won't be the only one.

Once in a while, something will get stolen (several iPods got stolen either last semester or last year), but it's been because kids left their rooms unlocked...lock your door when you're not there and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry about stuff getting stolen. However, since it is safe it doesn't make you very concerned. I sometimes leave my laptop in the library for hours, and although that is probably stupid, nothing ever happens. At other schools I would probably be concerned. My friend's roommate (he goes to GT) left the door unlocked one night. When they woke up both computers, x-box, etc. were gone. That type of stuff doesn't happen here though.

Yeah, use good sense. Lock your door when you're asleep or not in the room, and don't leave your stuff that's easily picked up just anywhere, and you'll be fine.

Your computer charger can get stolen from the library. Finals week, when everyone is in there, and you leave for 10 min, it will disappear.

Food/drinks from your dorm room will also magically disappear. Expensive stuff doesnt really ever disappear. Infact I forgot my ipod in the gym and someone returned it to me that evening because it had my name engraved on the back.

Otherwise because my roommate lost his key, our room was always unlocked along with several other rooms on our hall. People walked in and out of rooms, and chilled in each others rooms all the time. No one really cared and everyone was pretty tight. Depends on your hall though.

i've never had any problems leaving my computer in the library for short amounts of time, and same thing with rooms. by the end of the year we didnt lock our room a whole lot unless we'd both be gone for a while, but there was one kid from the floor below us who was walking around our floor asking if anyone had any info on somebody stealing his 360 from his room...left the cables and jsut took teh system. so it does happen, you have ot be careful. a room 2 doors down from mine got an ipod and like 50 bucks stolen from a wallet, and the kids swore they locked the door (but of course didn't)...it happens, but its rare. smaller things like food and drinks do disappear, becuase your friends come in adn take them
