I'm looking for some safety/match schools preferably in the NE. I prefer urban/suburban schools, either LACs or mid-sized universities. I'm thinking about a liberal arts major something along the lines of history/English/classics etc. I'm a Junior and my old SAT range is 1400~1500 based on practice tests/psat. I'm probably in the 10~15% of a competitive public school, and am in the IB program. I have a few dips in my grades, however, from math/science classes. My grades are on a rising trend though. Also I have somewhat unique ECs, or rather the combination is. Any suggestions?

NE - Trinity, Barnard and Bryn Mawr would be good. More selective options would include Haverford and Vassar.

Most of the other options would be in small/medium sized, primarily in rural areas, and (expanding into Ohio) would include Colgate, Hamilton, Bard, Connecticut College, Kenyon and Oberlin. Solid less selective choices could include Dickinson and Skidmore.

Given your interests, I would definitely take a shot at Swarthmore and Amherst. Of the match/safety options above I'd favor Vassar, Barnard and Kenyon.

I've been a city kid for most of my life and I simply can't face the prospect of isolation. Not for four years anyway. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's relatively hard to find a good safety NE Liberal Arts College in the city...
Wellsley has a more urban location (Boston) but it's not really a safety

Clost but outside of NE:
Barnard in NYC might be a great choice given its location and the quality of education.
Bryn Mawr is very close to Philadelphia, could be a safety/match.
Haverford and Swarthmore are also close to Philadelphia but are very competitive to get in, esp Swarthmore

Tufts would seem like a nice fit.

I like Tufts. But mandatory math classes?!?

Take a look at Johns Hopkins. Although many people think Johns Hopkins is only a "science" school it has excellent English and history programs as well.

U of Rochester doesn't have mandatory math classes. It'd probably be a match for you. I know its humanities are at least decent.

Safeties: Northeastern, UMass Amherest

Matches: Any of the other 4 Consortium schools (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College) if you'd like a gigantic college-city atmosphere with a LOT of people.

Wellesley for suburban beauty, Boston University for urban integration, although it's on the big side. Brandeis is considered a good catch, as is Tufts.

I'm so glad you like New England! I'm a MA-girl myself.

BTW: I would definitely say that JHU is a reach. It's incredibly selective and not really in the NE either. In addition, although I'm pretty sure you're a girl, Smith/Wellesley/Mt. Holyoke are all-women's schools. If you're a guy, they're very high reaches.

There are many good suggestions here, but Amherst is definitely NOT a match. It is one of the top colleges in the country, ranked 1, 2, or 3 each year of all LACs.

Tufts has a mandatory math requirement, but it can often be easily completed by "non-math" courses such as baseball statistics or so (I think).
