safety, please

Great -- I like some of these.

USC is already on my list, nestled near the top with some of the usual brand names. Although I'm a little dubious about the neighborhood, I think, after NYC, I can deal with it. Actually, shallow as this might seem (O.K., make that "shallow as this is...") I'm more leary of "Ms. Average" here being among all the "beautiful people" there!
Emory could be a possible, but I think the AdCom there wants courting, i.e. you have to visit multiple times to show interest.
Hopkins, sorry, nix that one because of mega crime in Baltimore and the legendary cut-throat atmosphere.
I would LOVE Pepperdine, but it's way Christian and Church-y, so I don't think I'd get in.
UCSD, Miami -- made my list (though should I worry about tons of rich, gorgeous girls at Miami?).
Vandy -- for some reason it's not clicking, dunno quite why.
Rice is on my "fo'sure" list, though they do need to improve their dorms (Ha!)
Scripps, I've revised my initial reaction ('cos of the comfort level in the dorms and possible $$$) -- it's on the list.

So, thanks everyone. And, 2331clk , glad we're friends now. I think this is it for this thread. Have a great what's-left-of-the-summer everyone, and best of luck with all the apps.

i think you should reconsider tulane. it is nestled in the middle of uptown new orleans; there is perhaps no place better to attend college. its math/ science programs are highly respected. you would without a doubt get in AND receive scholarship money. (i got 26/ yr in merit aid with only a 2100) i cannot say enough about the city of new orleans. i grew up here, love it, and would never think about settling anywhere else. it somehow is starly traditional and very bohemian at the same time. although the storm undoubtedly affected this city, it is nearly as bad as the national media made it. much of what you saw was sensationalized ********; the city is already well back on its way, and, in some ways, better than it was before. think about tulane; be a part of its rebuilding; its name will remain just as respected in academic circles even if its USnews ranking drops a few spots due to a smaller student body/ faculty and a shruken engineering dept.

not to mention the fact that you would have more fun there than any other place on your list.
