It’s that time of year again…parents are trying to let go and their college kids can’t wait to get to campus and FREEDOM! As much as we want to let them go and cut the apron strings, there are a couple of things we need to help them with before we shut that dormitory or fraternity/sorority house door. If your kid has decided to take the top bunk or loft their bed, it’s probably smart to talk about safety rails (I’ll wait while you roll your eyes). I would have felt the same way before my kid rolled out of a 7-foot loft sound asleep (and yes, sober) and suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed and stroke. He spent 10 weeks in a coma and the next 20 months in grueling therapy to learn how to swallow, talk, and walk all over again at the age of 20. In the meantime, please ask your campus Housing Director or RA/Peer Leader about safety rails. With 71,000 kids aged 6-21 reporting to the ER every year with serious injuries, it’s really no laughing (or eye-rolling) matter.
I pointed this out a few days ago when someone was asking about mattress toppers. Too easy to get the bed so thick that the bed rail isn’t effective.
