<p>I know that this is probably something that a lot of us have not given any thought to yet, but as I was talking to a friend about growing up, moving away, being independent and responsible for ourselves...the topic of campus safety came up. Northwestern is reputed to be a very safe campus, and Evanston is a generally safe city. Campus police are effective and areas are well-lit. Even so, I know it comforts many people to be carrying some sort of back-up protection in case the unthinkable happens. Northwestern and most other universities strictly prohibit the possession and use of firearms, knives, stun guns, etc., as they should. But for those who insist on a protective measure, would it be legal to carry something like pepper spray on one's person? The campus handbook does not explicitly ban it, as it is not exactly a "weapon". I know this is legal and unregulated within the city of Evanston and Chicago as well...just wondering about the campus itself. </p>

<p>Unfortunately IL does not allow the Concealed Carry of Firearms. The only alternative is Fanny Pack Carry.</p>

But if you wish to bring a firearm I would suggest getting a FOID card if you will be getting an IL Drivers License and switching your residency to IL. And you got to follow the basic rules of the Assault Weapons ban imposed by Bill Klinton. I would suggest a .45 caliber 1911 with a 3 inch barrel or a commander length. The mags cannot hold more than 10 rounds and cannot be loaded in the gun if you are going to fanny pack carry. </p>
