Self Defense in Berkeley

i have to walk home late at night sometimes and i was just wondering what kind of weapons i can legally carry in self defense (knives, pepper spray etc)...Does anyone have advice on this in general?

carry a hockey stick

Your best weapon is your body posture. Maintain a strong forward gaze and don't slouch. Blades above some 3 inches or so are illegal.

I'm pretty sure you can buy and carry pepper spray. I mean I was able to buy a couple keychain sprays for a buck each during Fry's black Friday.

If it were me, I'd carry my sword I bought from chinatown. :D

Learn a type of karate (or weaponless martial art) so that even without the weapon, you will be in a decent situaiton. I'm pretty sure "Karate" means open hand, and I think it was developed by those who were not allowed to have weapons (peasant classes in Japan). Learning a martial art also gives you other benefits.

Stunt baton for the win!

And a rape whistle. Get one from UC Police Department. I got mine during Calpolooza (LOL).

An Uzi or bazooka always work nicely, but not very discrete...hmmm... Get a cane sword!! Very discrete!

There's a lot of different martial arts to choose from. Kempo, tae-kwon-do, aikido, etc. They're all weaponless self-defense forms.

See above for the absolute best advice.

Pepper spray isn't bad either. Too bad California has terrible gun control laws or you could pack heat.

Well, in my honest opinion, do not carry a concealed weapon on campus. It's just retarded.

1)If you are in a struggle with someone who is not armed, cops will definitely suspect you to be the douche first, since you pack heat.

2) Unless you can handle your weapon carefully and extremely well, the assailant can disarm, steal your gun, and shoot you very quickly in close combat.

3) Risk of shooting something you do not want to be shot.

I think pepper spray and stun guns are good enough. Probably can get a decent stun gun at $50-80.

seriously, just get pepper spray. Most people won't bother you, and if they do, a quick blast in the eyes will scare them off.

Remember, you can always use Berkeley's late night Bear Walk thingy.
