Thank you,

Going outside of NC, you’re going to end-up paying triple the tuition. I would put more in-state schools on your list as targets and safeties.

Does your HS use Naviance? If so take a look at the scattergrams to guide you on categorizing your in-state publics. If you don’t have Naviance, ask your GC to help you.

William and Mary is a reach, Chapel Hill probably as well. The rest may be targets, Appalachian State may be a highly likely.

Do pay attention to your budget…a safety has to also be affordable, or it’s not a safety.

Good luck.

Thank you for all the public and private comments/advice- I agree with my parents on affordability and appreciate your perspectives.

Also know that UNC-Chapel Hill is tough and so is William and Mary with the current scores/GPA and may not have a chance to improve them much in the COVID-19 environment.

Is there a general feeling that in-state schools and some privates will be less competitive versus last year, due to multiple test cancellations, less outside regional interest and perhaps less international students or is there a feeling that this will be balanced with deferments this fall/spring?

To your question above I personally do not think private colleges will be less competitive this year. In fact more people may apply to certain high ranking colleges because they are test optional now. If more people choose to stay in state like you suggest then that would make in state schools more competitive. Avoid underestimating the competitiveness of apps.

Have you considered Virginia Military Institute or Roanoke College? Very different environments but you may qualify for merit. At Roanoke your household income would be considered. Looks like history programs are good at each.
NC State looks like a great option.

Thank you for those recommendations and the statement on competitiveness.

VMI while very strong academically is not a good fit for me, Roanoke has reached out a good bit but I don’t know much about them, and I am not sure if its reputation is quite as strong as Elon, or Wofford and I don’t really know anyone who has gone there to ask.

NC State would be actually my top choice. I have heard great things from the folks that go there and love the options in dual degrees, etc. and the social scene does not seem overwhelming, a lot of club sports for running/tennis and Raleigh is a great city of course.

I wanted to provide an update, primarily for other students who may be looking for information on the schools I applied to in this thread and not for any glorification of my college search. I used the information from others to help me!

UNC- Chapel Hill- waitlisted
NC State- In, early action
Wofford- In, early action with merit
Elon - In, early action with merit
App State- In, early action
South Carolina- In, early action
Charleston- In, early action with merit
